The trailhead starts less than a mile from our Airbnb, just after the Intervale Center's brick house. Combination of dirt road and trail running through organic farm fields and forests along the Winooski River. Quite unique to be so close to an urban area. Eventually connects with a paved path, through Ethan Allen Park, and then after navigating a neighborhood, the Burlington Greenway (bike path) along Lake Champlain. Total distance is anywhere from 2 to 15 miles. Terrain is almost all flat except getting down to the Intervale, and through Ethan Allen Park.

About a mile or so from our Airbnb, this is trail walking or running up and down a heavily wooded area that has a few openings to meadows. Only about 65 acres so not a great deal of overall mileage, but a really nice natural area.

About 3 miles from the Airbnb, this is a small 30 acre gem of a forest that connects to the Burlington Greenway along Lake Champlain. Read about its history and significant natural communities at https://enjoyburlington.com/arms-forest/. Terrain is flat or rolling forest, nothing too strenuous.

First, check out https://www.vtbikeped.org/ for an interactive map of this lengthy rec path. Waterfront Park at the foot of College Street is the starting point of the Burlington Greenway, a multi-use path (formerly a rail line) that runs both north and south along the Lake. The southern section, closed for renovations during the summer of 2020, runs for about two miles into Oakledge Park. From there its on a combination of streets and paths until linking up with the South Burlington recreational path on the other side of Route 7. You can take a diversion to Red Rocks Park (an actual forested park), or Queen City Park - a unique, small neighborhood overlooking the Lake. Heading north from Waterfront Park, the path runs five miles to the Winooski River, and then continues across a relatively new steel bridge built just to convey recreationalists to the Colchester side. Continue on the path as it winds though a residential neighborhood, public park, and then back on the former RR right of way to the Causeway. This is the highlight of the trail and should not be missed, as the narrow causeway runs for several miles across the Lake and eventually ends at a cut that can only be crossed by bike ferry! Those who do will be rewarded with many more miles of trials and back roads in the Champlain Islands. Mileage - if you just stay within BTV on the path and did a north and south loop , its 14 miles. The Causeway adds another 5-10 miles.
