A unique atmosphere lingers at Scherrer Park in Morcote, on Lake Lugano. Inside the lush subtropical vegetation, reminding of exotic countries, are in fact architectural and artistic works inspired by distant cultures such as a Siamese tea house, an Egyptian temple and Greek sculptures. This fascinating garden is the work of Hermann Arthur Scherrer who since the 1930s dreamt of recreating a magical place inspired by his travels. Between palm trees and bamboo, eucalyptuses and lemon trees, cedars and oleanders, the visitor can admire many floral and scented species of plants.

Carona is a charming village located at the foot of the Monte San Salvatore, on a hill above Lugano. It prides itself in an exceptional historic and artistic heritage: the richness of the outstanding religious buildings are almost equal in quality to the many dwellings from the past. These are evidence of the work of local craftsmen (architects, decorators, painters and sculptors) that, between the 15th and 18th centuries worked all over Europe leaving a trace of their mastery along the way. Returning to their birthplace they would embellish their villages with fine buildings and prestigious decorations.

A big park in bloom, beautiful views of the Lugano Bay. Silence of the woods facing Lake Lugano and a few pleasant stops shaded by outstanding monuments. The walk that from Carona leads to Alpe Vicania (a pasture) and back, offers a new insight into Ticino’s green and silent side. Green like the fields of Alpe Vicania where horses graze free. Silent like the narrow alleys of Carona rich in history including the ancient sanctuary of the Madonna d’Ongero adorned by stuccoes and baroque frescoes or the 13th century Torello Monastery.

The trail dedicated to Hermann Hesse leads to some of the most beautiful spots in the municipality of Collina d’Oro, which were held particularly dear by the poet and feature in several of his works. Description In 1919, at the age of 42, Hermann Hesse left his family and moved to Ticino. After a few weeks, he found accommodation at Casa Camuzzi in Montagnola, where he remained for 12 years. The circular hike takes you to places and sights that had a major influence on Hesse. Starting at the Hermann Hesse Museum, you head towards Lugano to the Church of St. Abbondio, in the graveyard of which Hesse was laid to rest. The area is known for its cypress-lined Friedhofsweg (cemetery road). The path then arcs through the forest and back towards Montagnola. Walking along Via Hermann Hesse, you reach Casa Rosso, near which a commemorative stone was erected to mark Hermann Hesse’s 100th birthday. This same route will bring you back to the starting point of the walk. Hermann Hesse’s love of nature and the Ticino landscape led him to spend a lot of time outdoors, when he painted numerous watercolours on his extensive hikes. Two other trails also share information about Hesse’s family, his marriages and his aversion to the war.
