Sightseeing

This is an oasis in the middle of a desert. There are pools of water to wade in up to your waist in some areas. And the waterfall is very pretty. A great place to hike around and then cool off in the pools. Just a little over 30 minutes from the camp and well worth the drive.

Carlsbad Caverns is just an hour away from the camp. It is well worth the trip! Depending on the time of the year, plan to stay later for the bat flight. It’s amazing!

If you like to hike, but don’t enjoy steep inclines, Dog Canyon is the place to go. There are multiple trails to traverse and in the fall, the leaves are a beautiful display of God’s power in the seasons.

City advice

Getting around

Watch out for wildlife and cattle on the highway.

When driving up or down the mountain highway, much of the time it is open range for cattle. This means that the cattle are free to roam and much of the time you will find them in the middle of the road. Be especially careful at night since most of these cows are black. Also watch for deer and elk crossing especially at night.
Getting around

There are NO GAS STATIONS in Queen.

If you have less than a half tank of gas when you come through Carlsbad or Artesia, you might want to fill up since there are no gas stations up on the mountain and you may want to drive around to sightsee. There are also no grocery stores, so if you plan to do your own cooking, be sure to shop before you leave Artesia or Carlsbad.
