Sylvesterkläuse in Herisau, Schwellbrunn, Urnäsch, Appenzell

Like patches of bright colour dotting the snowy winter landscape, the mummers procession is probably the Appenzellers’ most venerable winter tradition. On the last day of the year – and according to the old Julian calendar on the 13th of January «beautiful», «ugly» and «forest and nature» figures take to the street, sing, ring their bells and wish everyone a happy New Year.

Cattle drives from the Alps

As summer approaches, the dairy herdsmen drive their cattle up to the alpine pastures in an orderly and colourful procession. A boy in traditional herdsman’s garb leads the way. Behind him amble a few shaggy white Appenzell goats, driven by a girl in typical children’s folk dress. The main herdsman strides proudly along in festive folk dress: yellow leather breeches, red cloth waistcoat, a black hat decorated with flowers and ribbons, studded suspenders, white knee socks and special jewellery. Don't miss this spectacle which takes place around mid-September. Exact dates and places on the Net.
