City/town information
Started as a wild frontier town supporting Fort Keogh, Miles City is became important to the cattle industry. It is here that the cattle driven up from Texas crossed the Yellowstone on their way to the shipping yards. The original cattlemen's organization which included men such as Teddy Roosevelt and Pierre Wibaux met here. Somewhat later it became the largest horse-raising area in the nation. Cattle remains the dominant industry in the area, but Miles City is also eastern Montana's biggest health, financial, and education center. The community college has been recognized as one of the best in the nation and works hard to provide its students with marketable skills and a good education. In addition the arts flourish here on the prairie with a number of painters, sculptors, and potters. Much of downtown still looks like it did in the early 1900's, but the shops are different - come check them out! Visit the museums, have a picnic in one of the parks, swim in our natural oasis or do some fishing and hiking. And enjoy a glass of local wine at the Tongue River Winery!
