You can hike all the way around the lake. From the house 1 mile each way , lake around 3 miles (total 5 miles). If your thinking a late evening hike make sure you phone is charged for flash light use or bring a flashlight, the hike back to the house, in the dark is complicated. Best way to get there is to pull up San Moritz lodge on your phone and walk around the lake from the lodge. Another option park at the lake, near the San Moritz Lodge and avoid the 1 mile hike up hill back to the house.

City advice

Book before you go

In winter check to see if you need chains

Check this web site to see if you will need chains for your trip: http://socalmountains.com/roads/ R2 means chains required on all cars except 4WD R3 means chains required on all cars and 4WD
Book before you go

Be prepared for snow! Buy chains before you get here

Be prepared pack your snow chains if necessary. Chains can be purchased at the bottom of the mountain at most auto supply store like Auto zone or Napa. It's a good idea to have gloves handy to put on chains. Note at the pull stops you can usually hire someone to put on chains maybe $20/$30. Be sure to get the right size specific to your tires. If your driving a 4WD or all wheel drive you are required to carry chains but not required to put them on your vehicle.

Phone Reception

Not all phone services are created equal so you may experience bad reception on the mountain or spotty connections while exploring. I don't have experience with all phone services but Att works great at the house. Some devices can be set up for wifi calling and text messaging and texting even works when your not getting the best phone reception. One trick I have learn is the colder it is the better the reception, so maybe just step outside and you will get better reception.
Getting around

Safety items for snow travelers

1st time snow traveler? or just a regular that needs a reminder of good to have items when traveling to the snow. Gloves packed on top of your bag, have a snow scraper handy to clean windshield, carry a shovel in the car (never know when you might have to dig your self out), cat litter (a good way to melt the snow & or give your tires traction) & extra weight helps when driving in snow. Snow can cause all kinds of delays, make sure your traveling with a full tank of gas, if you filled the radiator with only water it is time to upgrade to mostly radiator fluid (it won't freeze).
