Hiking

For the best views and hike, drive past Mt. Lake Campground and right past the airport. The Long Point trail offers 3.8 miles there and back with stunning views from the iconic Long Point. Meander through woods and meadow. The month of May and maybe early June offers rhododendrons blooming at their peak set against this backdrop for great photo op. My dad and uncle helped build this earthen dam offering views of the Gauley River on one side and Summersville Lake on the other. You can drive right over it. Park at the top and read about the history of the dam 3 years in the making. Snap some of the best views. Sunset is glorious on the lake side. Mornings are also great esp if you can catch the fog rolling in. Drive to the bottom of the Dam and see the Gauley and hydroelectric dam up close and personal. Don't fall in though! This is the put-in for rafting during Gauley Season in September and October. Best Class V+ rapids east of the Mississippi. Westerners come for the wild ride. Great fishing, too. Rustic campground Go to the end of Battle Run Beach and get another view of the Dam. Here's some more family history. Not only did my Dad and uncle help build it, but my Granny was from the community of Gad that used to sit where the Lake is now. Residents were relocated so the area could be flooded to create the Lake. The dam was going to be named Gad Dam. But. Well. Say that out loud. So they named it after the next closest town- Summersville. But that's why you'll find T-shirts with the 'shoulda been' namesake. And my cousin's new brewery in Sville is named Gad Dam Brewery.
