Favorite Neighborhoods & Towns

Here are my favorite neighborhoods and beach towns in Kauai.
Kapaa was named "The #1 Trending Destination in the U.S." by Trip Adviser! It was also named "Kauai's Most Charming Town." Kapaa is a hip local surfer and artisan beach town, with over 20 coffee shops and Kauai's #1 weekly farmers market! It offers beautiful beaches, unique boutiques, local restaurants, juice bars, several beach bars, including Kauai's only barefoot beach bar, art galleries and more. The Kapaa shoreline bike trail begins here and is the longest shoreline bike trail on the island, and a favorite by visitors. Bike rental shops are located nearby. Waimea means "Red Waters" in Hawiian. This is due to the red color of the Waimea River carrying the "red dirt" down from Waimea Canyon, Hawaii's "Grand Canyon. Waimea Town is a charming area with Hawaiian style shaved ice, spicy shrimp and chicken stand, "Red Dirt T-Shirt"gift boutiques and more. It's worth a stop & shop on your way to Waimea Canyon and the island's West side.

This quiet Hawaiian neighborhood is mostly lived in by locals. It hosts the best Fresh Juice Hale on the island supplied by many organic farms nearby. Its country store called "Whalers Country Market" is famous for its authentic Hawaiian Poke. Stop in for some on your way to north shore.

Sightseeing

Plan on spending one day at Hanalei Bay and beach. It's a beautiful half moon bay with a large white sandy beach. Try paddle boarding up the river, boogie boarding, cliff jumping or swimming at the pier, sun bathing, smash ball on the beach and more. It's fun to grab lunch from one of the food trucks nearby and make an easy impromptu picnic on the beach.

A definite stop on your tour of the island near Poipu. Beautiful overlook of the famous "Spouting Horn" that sprays giant plumes of ocean water pushed up through a lava tube that fills every few minutes from large waves. Interesting gift shops line the path to the parking lot and are worth stopping in for a gift orHawaiian jewelry.

On your way to Waimea Canyon you may want to stop by for a tour and tasting at the Kauai Coffee Company plantation. A restaurant and ice cream shop make a perfect "pairing" for delicious island grown coffee blends. Take home several bags of fresh Kauai Coffee as gifts for your friends or enjoy yourself to remind you of your memorable vacation in Kauai. Yum!

Book a sunset sail along Kauai's legendary Napali Coast. Several charter companies provide service from port in Eleele on the West side. This is an activity that I always do whenever I'm in Kauai and share it with family and friends. Try Blue Dolphin Charters or Captain Andy's, both rated very high by guests. (My personal favorite is Captain Andy's).

Also in Poipu is beautiful Lawai Beach. These beaches are hard moon shaped coves with small sandy beaches flank by rocky points. Good snorkeling. Beach House restaurant is also located here. Plenty of public parking nearby.

Another idyllic stretch of beach located on the South Shore, Mahaulepu Beach is a popular destination for windsurfers, snorkelers, swimmers, fishers and sunbathers. The undeveloped shoreline offers miles of exploring, including a fascinating hike that goes past geological and cultural sites found along a coastal trail. To access the remote beach, take a two-mile car ride to the end of Poipu Road, then travel east on the dirt cane field to the main cane haul road intersection and turn right. There you’ll find a security shack posting beach hours (beach access closes at 6 p.m.) that are strictly enforced by the landowner, who allows public access at their own risk. You can also reach this beach by hiking the Mahaulepu Heritage Beach Trail from Shipwreck Beach near the Hyatt Resort in Poipu.

Kauapea or "Secret" Beach is one of Kauai's most beautiful beaches. It's in the Kilauea area on the way to the North Shore just north of the Kilauea Lighthouse. As its nickname suggests, Secret Beach is not marked with signs nor is it easily accessible. A short but fairly steep trail leading to the beach is located at the end of the first dirt road you’ll see on the right hand side when turning onto Kalihiwai Road from Kuhio Highway. There is no formal parking lot. Visitors leave their vehicles along the road’s end, which abuts a private residence. The dirt path to the beach is easily found just west of the house. The 10-minute hike to the water is moderately difficult and can be slippery when wet. While seasoned locals typically hike down barefoot with a surfboard slung under one arm, sneakers are recommended for first-timers. Take it slow and watch for root systems that can potentially be tripping hazards.
