Cardinal, Ontario
Cardinal dates back to the 1790's. Its legacy is still visible in its old buildings and the remains of the historic Galop Canal. The waters around Cardinal are an attractive spot for divers, as there are many sunken vessels and they are the final resting place of the Conestoga.

COMING SOON! "I'M SO EXCITED" - a new business is coming to Cardinal. A Honey and Candy Store will be opening soon at this location. I just sampled their hard candies and their sponge toffee. They were delicious, are gluten free and vegan friendly. The Honey Store will be making treats such as ice cream and drinks with honey. Wraps made with beeswax and their gift baskets are a nice change from the ordinary.

Towns East of Cardinal

Located along the Saint Lawrence 9km east of Cardinal. The village of Iroquois grew as a pioneer settlement after the arrival of the United Empire Loyalists in 1784. In 1857 Iroquois became an incorporated village and the first in the area to have water services. The Iroquois Canal was part of the Williamsburg Canal, it's lock system was designed to bypass the Galop Rapids. The remains of the old lock may still be seen at the end of Carman Road on the way to the new Iroquois Lock lookout. As a side note, Carman Road is named after one of the original Loyalist families recognized for their contributions to the development of the community. Their home, the old stone Carman House is now a museum and may be visited by appointment only.  In 1950’s some of the original village of Iroquois was moved one mile back from the river to accommodate the Hydro and Seaway Project. In 1959 what remained of the original Iroquois village was flood. Today it's a destination for divers.

Located along the Saint Lawrence 25.7km east of Cardinal. After the Battle of Crysler's Farm in 1813, settlers settled in Dundas County, creating West Williamsburg. In 1851 it was renamed Morrisburg in honor of James Morris, a politician and the first Postmaster General of the United Province of Canada. Incorporated as a village in 1860, Morrisburg could boast a gristmill, a carding mill and a fanning mill. The Grand Trunk Railway reached Morrisburg in 1855. During the 1950's, over 80 homes were moved and the entire downtown business district was demolished and relocated to a shopping plaza to accommodate the flooding caused by the St. Lawrence Seaway project. The Canadian National Railway line was moved 1.1 kilometers north and much of the original railbed was used in the construction of highway 2. Buildings and other artifacts can be viewed at Upper Canada Village.

Towns West of Cardinal

Located along the Saint Lawrence 9km west of Cardinal. Prior to the arrival of the French in the 1600's, Johnstown and the surrounding area had been occupied by various Indigenous cultures, off and on, for many centuries. Artifacts such as clay utensils and arrowheads have been found throughout the township. According to the Edwardsburgh Centennial Committee, Johnstown was used by Native Americans as a stopover place due to it being fronted with a calm section of the Saint Lawrence River that was located between two rapids.

Located along the Saint Lawrence 15.2 miles west of Cardinal. Prescott was settled in 1787 when Major Edward Jessup was awarded 1200 acres by King George III for his loyalty to the Crown during the American War of Independence. However, the town was not established until 1810 when Jessup had a portion of his farm surveyed and sold town lots. He named the town after General Robert Prescott, a former governor of Canada. Prescott was an important site on the Saint Lawrence River, standing at the head of the series of rapids between it and Montreal. All boats and ships between Montreal and York (later named Toronto) had to transfer goods and people here. Prescott's first major business was facilitating these transfers. When war broke out in 1812 between America and Britain, the British decided to build a fort, Fort Wellington. The fort was to safeguard the border and maintain the flow of traffic along the Saint Lawrence River. Because of its location, the town of Prescott grew quickly. The immigrants were largely from the British Isles and the United States. A few decades later there was a large influx of Irish due to the Great Famine. In 1816 a post office was established and in 1823 a customs house. Alpheus Jones, a Loyalists descendant, was both the postmaster and the tax collector. He built a cut limestone house which is still considered by many to be the grandest home in Prescott. Prescott's harbour developed considerably in the early 19th century, it became notable for its freight forwarding businesses, as local forwarders transferred freight between Prescott and Montreal.
