45 minutes south of the ranch is one of the best- kept ski secrets in Colorado. Monarch Mountain has several lifts and runs and is rarely crowded. It's one of our favorite places to ski because of its old- school vibes and small crowds.

A short drive up CR 306 (Cottonwood Pass) is Denny Creek Trailhead. A great place to embark on a 14er adventure up Mt. Yale, or a slightly less intense hike to Hartenstein Lake.

If you're a fan of whiskey, Deerhammer is a must-stop when in town. The staff is incredibly friendly and they will let you sample many of the spirits they are distilling. And if it's the summer season, it's a must to grab a drink from Deerhammer and a Viking Burger from the Buena Viking.
