A great place to walk around. Great local restaurants, coffee shops, yoga studios, rich in good architecture and history. This was once known as the Harlem of the South and 2nd Street was known as Black Wall St. African Americans build this part of town under harsh circumstances to rival any other neighborhood in Richmond. Must visits include the Maggie Walker House, walk down 2nd Street and check out the Hippodrome Theatre. Have a cup of coffee at Lift or grab lunch at Mama J's for the best soul food.

Sightseeing

If you are visiting from Thanksgiving to New Years, be sure to get tickets to GardenFest of lights. It is something special to walk in the gardens when it is aglow! In growing season and fall, the Japanese garden is lovely. You can also reserve the tea house for lunch. It's a gem.

City advice

Don't miss

There are a ton of ways to get around Richmond!

Walking is no problem. Even at night most streets are well lit. We are in a very safe part of the city. But it IS a city, so pay attention. I walk our dogs at night and never feel unsafe. The Pulse (bus rapid transit) goes up and down Broad St. from Shockoe Bottom to the Far West End in Short Pump. Uber and Lyft are plentiful and come quickly most of the time. Scooters are available on the street. Download the Bolt, Lime, or Bird apps and zoom down the bike lane. Electric bikes available in Monroe Park and on Broad St. for rent. Check the bike lanes when you cross the street!!!
