City advice

What to pack

The desert climate is dry!

Useful items to bring or buy when you get here: refillable water bottles, power/snack bars, sun screen, long sleeve shirts and hats. If you're planning to hike, bike or spend anytime outside, the sun is intense. It doesn't take long to get burned. Start hydrating a few days before you get here. Once here, continue to stay hydrated. Do NOT hike without water! People die in our desert every year because they get lost or disoriented and do not have enough water to survive.
Getting around

Rental car, Lyft or Uber from my location.

Once you get into town, you can park and get the 3.9-mile Sun Link streetcar to downtown, the University of Arizona & 4th Ave. from Mercado San Augustine. You must purchase a ticket prior to boarding - Cost: 1-day SunGO ticket - $4.50 www.sunlinkstreetcar.com
Customs and culture

First UNESCO City of Gastronomy

Tucson was named the first UNESCO city of Gastronomy in the USA - 2017 - honoring Southern Arizona's food traditions and culinary innovations. It's a foodie town with new restaurants opening monthly. Local favorites are Sonoran Hot Dogs, Mexican food, local brews and Prickly Pear margaritas! Try a refreshing Raspado - a concoction of shaved ice typically with juice, chunks of fresh fruit, ice cream and lechera (sweetened condensed milk)
Getting around

Downtown Parking

Downtown Tucson Parking Lots & Garages Parking meters are $1.00/hour, some with 1/2 to 2 hour limits 8am - 5pm Monday - Friday downtown or 7 days a week around the University. Free holidays. Free meter street parking after 5pm daily. www.Parkopedia.com
Getting around

Sunlink - The Tucson Streetcar

A good way to get downtown without driving. Park and ride the streetcar from Mercado San Agustin. The route is 4 miles with 23 stops including Fourth Avenue, Main Gate Square and the University of Arizona in central Tucson. www.sunlinkstreetcar.com for rates and schedules.
