ATV/UTV Riding

The Lewis County Trail Permit System has over 84 miles of trails and 450 miles of seasonal roads open to OHV's (Dirt Bikes, ATV and UTVs). This trail system offers beautiful, scenic areas to ride, park and play.

State Parks

The Whetstone Gulf State Park, named in 2007 as one of the Top 100 Campgrounds in the nation, is built in and around a three-mile-long gorge cut into the eastern edge of the Tug Hill Plateau and features spectacular vistas. The park has wooded campsites, a scenic picnic area along Whetstone Creek, a man-made swimming area and trails for hiking and cross-country skiing. Above the gorge is Whetstone Reservoir, stocked with tiger muskie and large-mouth bass for fishermen, and popular for canoeing.

John Young Nature Trail is a 2.2 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located near Barnes Corners that features a waterfall and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from April until October.

Biking

All the local roads on Tug Hill offer outstanding biking options, gravel and paved. However, there is one official bike route within Lewis County that is utilized for recreation and transportation. This route is located between Harrisville and Boonville and travels along the Route 12/8 12/3 scenic byway.

Sightseeing

The Boonville Black River Canal Museum consists of the Hemlock Mercantile that houses a pictorial history of the Canal and surrounding communities, an original one-of-a-kind restored canal warehouse that was used for mules and storage during the active years of the Black River Canal, a working mini-canal for children of all ages to run model canal boats through, an interactive pulley system that shows how different pulley set-ups distribute weight and two miniature crane systems that will be hands-on to allow the visitors to put supplies on a canal boat. In addition there is a full size working canal boat rudder with a moving deck, a full size replica of a canal boat that with displays showing what life was like living and working on the canal with static and picture displays, as well as a diorama of the Black River Canal Profile.

The Mennonite Heritage Museum, owned and operated by the Adirondack Mennonite Heritage Association & Historical Society, the Mennonite Heritage Farm is located in Kirschnerville near Croghan and was home to three generations of the Moser family. Brothers Joseph and John Moser emigrated from Alsace-Lorraine in the 1820’s. They cleared the land, built a shelter and brought in animals. They then brought their remaining family, parents and siblings to join them in Lewis County. The heritage farm buildings have exhibits and displays of artifacts and information about the life of the early Amish-Mennonite settlers in the Croghan area (1830-1900).

The American Maple Museum, located in the Village of Croghan, portrays the history of the maple industry through numerous exhibits of artifacts and equipment used to make maple syrup and its products.

Book before you go

Trail Permit

Although not required for the Town and County roads that are opened for access, we HIGHLY suggest purchasing a Lewis County Trail Permit. Permits are required for many other areas and for all off-road trails. Permits can be purchased online or at the following locations…The Edge Motel in Lyons Falls, The Flat Rock Inn in Lowville, Kovach Repair in Brantingham, Waite Motorsports in Adams Center and the Lewis County Clerks Office in Lowville. Insurance is required. As of now the cost is $65.00 for the first and $20.00 for each additional. There is a $20 Discount if you join a local club.
