🚶‍♀️🏃🚴‍♂️ Walk, run, cycle

There’s plenty of nature around Nieuwpoort. Perfect for walking, running or cycling.
Nieuwpoort city is connected to Nieuwpoort beach by a beautiful boardwalk along the estuary. Given the large pleasure harbour, you’ll be walking or cycling along a lot of sailing boats ⛵️

A path starts at the corner of the street. After 10 minutes of walking you’ll find yourself alone in nature. There is a path that goes around the different Koolhofput ponds. A full tour is about an hour of walking, door to door.

Go for a brisk walk in the dunes of Oostduinkerke. Don’t be surprised if you come across some horses, ponies or donkeys. You can get there by car. There is some parking available. I would recommend to use our bikes, which you’ll find in the garden shed. It’s a 20 minute ride from the house. If you want to have dinner straight after a good walk, I recommend the Spelleplekke.

Food shops

Eat like a local while supporting the local shops. Originally Nieuwpoort was a fishing city. The fish auction is still an economic engine for the city and provides plenty of fresh and delicious fish to local shops and restaurants. Most fish shops offer some prepared meals, soup and salads. I do recommend to
According to locals the freshest fish shop in town. If you want a full fish to cook yourself, definitely come here. If you are looking for prepared dishes, I recommend other shops. The queue can get really long here, so if you catch the shop open without a queue, you’re in luck.

Of course you’ll find super fresh delicious fish here, but also beautifully prepared meals, salads and soup. The staff is always friendly and ready to give advice in 3 languages 🇫🇷🇳🇱🇬🇧

Best bakery in town. This is no joke. Without wanting to offend anyone, they probably beat the best bakery in your city. Expect a long queue on Sunday morning. But don’t worry, they’re efficient, you’ll be served in max 30 minutes.

A great local restaurant that has been a staple since my youth. Great for meat lovers.

Make no mistake the Wasserette is no longer a laundromat, as the name suggests. It’s really one of the better restaurants in the city.

The cycle path at the corner of the street will lead you to the Lanterfanter in 10 minutes. This family owned restaurant has been around for decades. It has kept its charm while moving with the times. Traditional dishes with fresh ingredients, made with love.

Nothing better than homemade ice cream after a long day of sand castle building. This is hands down the best ice cream in Nieuwpoort.

A local favourite. Several delicious vegetarian and vegan options. This is in Oostduinkerke, next to Nieuwpoort. Ideal to combine with a walk in the dunes and on the beach.

Fine dining in the city centre. At 5 minutes walking distance from the house. The wine pairing is really excellent

Kids

First and foremost there’s the beach of course. Nothing beats building sand castles and catching tiny shrimp. However, if the weather doesn’t cooperate, there are other options.

Since a couple of years Nieuwpoort has a pretty decent skatepark. I wish this was around when I popped some olies.

You brought swimming gear for the sea but the weather is bad? No worries, the local swimming pool is only a 5 minute walk from the house.

Bars

There aren’t many proper bars in the city centre. This one however has it all. An old authentic vibe with an impressive beer list. The owner is a local that will happily guide you through the list.

Getting around

The coastal tram all along the Belgian coast

In the touristic season there’s a tram every 10 minutes. It’s a handy way to go from Nieuwpoort city to Nieuwpoort beach. “Nieuwpoort stad” is the closest stop to the house. It’s a 10 minute walk to the house.
