Neighborhoods

Štinjan is located on the southwestern end of Istria near Pula, on the hills and valleys above the northern coast of the Pula bay. In the Roman times it was known as “Astiniaum”. This small and peaceful tourist town has developed 700m away from the central beach which is surrounded by pine trees. Other than on the central beach, you can also go to the smaller nearby bays. In this small town you can enjoy the various beauty of the coast, bays, islands and peninsulas. During the summertime you can take part in various festivities, the most famous of which is the “Truffle Days” (a superb culinary festivity held over several days in all of Istria). While in beautiful Štinjan, do not miss the opportunity to visit Pula and Rovinj.

Historic

The Punta Christo fortress is the largest Austro-Hungarian fortification, and although it was abandoned for a long time, today it hosts numerous concerts, exhibitions and other cultural manifestations. During the Austro-Hungarian rule, the decision was made to make Pula the war port of the monarchy, so in addition to the numerous newly built structures such as the arsenal, hospital or hydrographic institute, a fortification system also had to be built. Therefore, a grandiose defense system was built in Pula, which included not only Pula but also other towns such as Medulin or Fažana. On the territory of Pula and its surroundings, from 1881 to 1918, even 31 structures were built, fortifications and batteries, and other necessary constructions. The Punta Christo fortress was built in Štinjan, on the Kristo peninsula of the same name, and is one of the largest Austro-Hungarian fortifications. It was built at the end of the 19th century, covered over ten thousand square meters and had as many as 270 rooms. The fortress had an excellent geographical position with the view of the Pula bay and the breakwater, and on the other side of the sea, Muzil and Brijuni. Around the fortress a moat is exposed, and access was possible only through one of three entrances. The courtyards of the Punta Christo fortress allow access to the underground rooms of the structure. After the Second World War, the fortress was abandoned. After many years of being neglected, abandoned and derelict, it has now been restored and today concerts, exhibitions and other cultural manifestations are held in the Punta Christo Fortress.
