(14 minutes by car) The site of the discovery of one of the most famous viking ships, is today a modern centre of learning about and experiencing viking culture. Between the museum and the beach you can also see and walk around among burial mounds from the viking era.

The oldest house that remains at Karljohansvern were a part of Horten farm built in the 16th century. There are also nice recreational areas along the fjord.
Parts of the area are preserved in order to protect bird wild life and plants.
On site is also The Naval Museum, The Preus Museum of Photography and Visual Art and The Local Historical Centre.

We don´t go there to hang out very often, but it is a nice shopping mall near the harbor. There is a free ferry for passengers that takes you across the Oslo fjord to Moss in about 30 minutes. For a fee you can also bring your car. www.basto-fosen.no
