Sightseeing

Pigeon House Mountain Didthul walking track is one of the best walks in Morton National Park and on the south coast. The walk is in the park’s southern section. The walk is pretty steep in parts, but terrific views make it worthwhile. You’ll hike through forest, heathland and age-old sandstone before coming to the best part – negotiating a series of ladders that lead you to the summit and the view. Take in the captivating sight of cliffs and gorges within the Budawang Wilderness, all carved by the Clyde River. On clear days, you may be able to see as far as Jervis Bay and Bermagui. You might even spot a lyrebird along the final portion of the track, where you can also check out rare Pigeon House Ash eucalypts. Enjoy some lunch at the top of the mountain, or head back down to the picnic area at the start of the walk for a well-deserved lunch.

This is a tough but rewarding hike to Byangee Mountain (506m) and the Pickering Point plateau. The trail isn't well marked and is overgrown with fallen trees in areas, so be prepared to navigate when necessary and for occasional scrambles across obstacles and through creeks. A good level of fitness is suggested for this trail, as there are steep gradients. Allow for a full day for this hike and be sure to be prepared with a good day pack and enough water or filtration to refill in the creeks. This track definitely worth the hike though!

The Castle Walking track is one of the most challenging yet rewarding days hikes along eastern Australia. The trail is technical and diverse across varied terrain, with some open woodland walking, tight crawls through vegetation and steep climbs toward the summit, not for the faint-hearted or inexperienced. The first portion starts near the Yadboro River just off Long Gully Road and is an easy grade well-established trail with occasional scrambles over fallen trees and river crossings. The trail braids as it traverses toward the saddle and there are no trail markers, so take time to find the trail. Once you reach the base of the Castle, hug the rock as high up as possible until you start your way up the saddle, the trail is easy to lose and you should avoid going down in elevation too much. There is a logbook you can sign for summiting parties on the SE corner of the Castle plateau.

Shallow Crossing on the Clyde River is a 30 minute drive from Batemans Bay and inland from Murramarang National Park. It's impassable during heavy rains and high tide. The area is surrounded by Boyne, South Brooman and Shallow Crossing State Forests, and is a haven for fishermen, bushwalkers, four-wheel drivers, and those who like to sit around and listen to the birds. Shallow Crossing can be accessed from the Princes Highway at East Lynne or from the Kings Highway at Nelligen. Either way involves travel along well-formed dirt roads suitable for all vehicles. Extreme care should be taken if driving on these roads after rain as they can become very slippery.
