Food scene

This is my favourite place for breakfast and coffee in Southsea and is a stones throw from the flat (just behind on Palmerston Road). They do brilliant Mediterranean food and have a really cosy, relaxed and friendly vibe. Never heard a bad word said about them!

A brilliant place to stop for tea, cake, or something a bit more substantial. It's located in the historic sea harbour walls at the pinchpoint into Portsmouth Harbour, so you'll be as close as possible to passing ships and explorers. It's also got the most amazing atmosphere when it's a bit stormy!

Sant Yagos most delicious tapas with a quirky, rustic feel and also has great wine. It's also home to a fun little speakeasy style bar downstairs which does great cocktails before and after your meal, or just as a standalone before exploring other foodie places.

My favourite place to eat when I'm looking for great Portuguese food and a really warm, friendly welcome. The hosts (owners) can't do enough for people and there's always such a brilliant atmosphere in there with people having a huge amount of fun. They do lovely Vinho Verde, and their Portuguese-style steak is to die for. Big portions and hearty food!

Whilst the Brewhouse & Kitchen is a chain, this place has a really independent vibe and the best, biggest beer garden in Southsea with outdoor covered spaces if the weather isn't great. It's always a fun place to be.

The best Indian food I've ever tasted - it's a whole experience as well as just a dinner. The cafe is gorgeously decorated. My Dad spent a lot of time in India when he was younger and the food brought tears to his eyes (the nostalgia, not the spice). It really is a special place, well worth a visit!

If you get a chance to try one of their Southsea Buns, then do! I don't have a particularly sweet tooth but they are extra special.

Independent shops

This is where I get all my refills and plastic free solutions from. It's a volunteer run initiative which I love to support and gives me so many ideas for cutting down on plastic waste. They have a great range of dry foods, cosmetics, kitchen/bathroom accessories and gifts.

An independent book shop with a really exciting, creative range of books (fiction and non fiction) and gifts for every book lover. They also have lovely gift cards too. A bit more of a walk from the flat but worth it if you're looking for eclectic, independent places to explore.

Beautiful plants and great advice for anyone who believes they are a house-plant killer - this is one of the loveliest independent shops in town and is right opposite the Plastic Free Larder.

A brilliant independent music shop which has been visited by all the biggest names, hosting random mini-gigs, supplying every vinyl you could wish for, and serving the most delicious pies in their tiny restaurant (with the quirkiest decor).
