First mentioned in an official document in 1331, the fortress was built by Teutonic Knights as protection against invading Tartars and was later enlarged by the local Saxon population.

The 40 meter cross which stands on top of the Caraiman peak in Romania’s Carpathian mountains has won the country a Guiness record for the tallest summit cross. The cross, which is a historic monument built between 1926 and 1928, commemorates the Romanian heroes who died in the First World War. Located at an altitude of 2,291 meters in the Bucegi mountains, part of the larger Carpathian mountains chain in Romania, the monument was checked by Guinness experts in August last year.
