Sightseeing

Our local beaches, Birubi Beach or Morna Point, have a mix of great surf and rockpools making it suitable for surfers and swimmers alike. At Birubi Beach you will be able to see the Worimi Conservation Lands (Stockton Bight Sand Dunes). Truly one of natures’ masterpieces, stretching 32 kilometres these are the largest dunes of their kind in the southern hemisphere. Explore by foot, camel or horse, or in your own 4WD. There is a surf club serving delicious breakfasts and lunches so it’s an ideal spot all year round. Due to its southerly aspect, Birubi Beach is famously known as the only place on the east coast of Australia where you can see the sun set over the ocean. Dolphins are commonly spotted at sunset, so take some cheese and crackers, sit on the point and watch them play! From May to November, the local waters also play host to the magnificent migrating humpback whales.

Port Stephens Council in partnership with Port Stephens Koalas has created a Koala Sanctuary to ensure first-class care to sick, injured and orphaned koalas. Opened in 2020, the Koala Sanctuary offers visitors a unique opportunity to see koalas in their natural habitat. It will also support their long-term rehabilitation and preservation. Enjoy the tranquil bush and the striking view of Port Stephens and offshore islands from the top of Tomaree Headland Lookout. One of Australia's most extraordinary marine playgrounds, the Great Lakes Marine Park is something to behold. The Park is home to many species; dolphins, turtles, fish, seabirds, sponge gardens, mangroves, saltmarshes, as well as some very special threatened species and Indigenous heritage sites.

Food scene

Port Stephens and neighbouring Hunter Valley are famous for our local, home-grown produce: oysters, macadamias, figs, olives, jams, avocados, boutique wines and craft brews. There is an excellent fisherman's co-op in Nelson Bay where you can buy fresh local seafood, or try direct from the source at Holbert’s Oyster Farm. The area boasts some great restaurants using fresh local produce: - Two Bobs Bakery (amazing bread, pastries and coffee) - Rick Stein at Bannisters - Shoal Bay Country Club - Little Bay Boat House - Buoys at the Bay
