Sightseeing

There are beaches for all - tiny coves to miles of sand for surfers! The bestfamily beaches are probably the Royal Bay of Grouville, Rozel, St Brelade, La Rocquier Harbour and Greve de Lecq. There are buckets and spades at the beach to borrow or possibly in the garage too. There is a large tidal range in Jersey so please take great care if you walk out at low tide.

Our local church is St Martin du Gouray, just along the road overlooking the bay. The service is at 10.30am on Sundays and you'd be most welcome there. The main Catholic church is St Thomas' Church in St Helier and holds regular services.

Getting around

Around and about in Jersey - the essentials

Jersey is blessed with stunning scenery, be that the coastline, beaches and castles or the stunning countryside. Even the cows are pretty! Initially, in some ways it feels like living in a traditional 'English' village and may be reminiscent of a way of like about 20 years ago in England. But of course, there is also the strong French influence with a smattering of French language seen in the road and place names, local surnames and cooking, not to mention the quaint Norman French granite farmhouses similar to those in Brittany and Normandy.

Shopping

The nearest shops to us are in Gorey village where you can find two convenience stores, pharmacy, butcher, dry cleaners, gift shop, cafe, optician, fruit and veg shop and a very good fish and chip shop. Further along from Gorey village is a petrol station with an Iceland wine shop and across the road from there a Co-Operative small supermarket open daily. The main supermarkets are Co-Operative Grande Marche in St Peter and St Martin, and Waitrose in Red Houses, Grands Vaux St Helier and Rue de Pres in St Saviour (our nearest one). Marks and Spencer food stores are in St Martin and St John.
Don't miss

Banking

The nearest bank is HSBC at Five Oaks and the nearest ATMs are at the petrol stations in Gorey, Five Oaks, and at Durrell Zoo. Please note that you will only get Jersey notes from the ATMs. You can use English/Scottish/Guernsey notes and coins in Jersey but you have to take Jersey currency to your bank in the UK to swap it to English notes if you take them home with you.
Customs and culture

Driving

The island is only 9 by 5 miles and so you need to think small and slow! The maximum speed limit is 40mph and in most villages it is 20mph and on 'green lanes' 15mph. The roads are narrow and there are sharp turns and blind corners and so please drive carefully and slowly. Parking can be a confusing affair with different schemes in operation in different car parks. Most will use the Just Park app. Please check where you park and follow it as the parking attendance will be checking Mon-Sat 8am - 5pm!

Urgent assistance

Accident and Emergency is free of charge for UK residents but in-patient care and GP and dental care visits are not. You need adequate medical insurance for your stay to pay for any unexpected healthcare. Dial 999 for police, ambulance, fire brigade or coastguard.

Cats

Derek our neighbour owns two cats who like to use our garden. Tigger is the tabby and Marmalade is the ginger cat. Marmalade in particular is very friendly and may try and get inside the house. It is up to you if you let her in and feed her with food next to the tumble dryer. Derek is her primary carer though so they will get fed!
