San Lorenzo's Experiences

How to experience one of the most pop and characteristic neighborhoods of Rome, between art, design and history
Squeezed between the two main railway stations, Termini and Tiburtina, it was the district of the proletariat and young people, a cultural and art laboratory. One of the most POP neighborhoods in Rome with art and design studios, craft workshops, clubs, aperitifs, young people and restaurants: the cultural navel of Rome. Framed by the Aurelian Walls, San Lorenzo opens from Porta San Lorenzo, the monumental arch built by Augustus in the fifth century. A.C., and entering the district, leaving behind the Parco dei Caduti of 19 July 1943, among the typical buildings of the POP building, in this triangle of streets the recovery of industrial architecture has given life to a real cultural center of San Lorenzo. Wandering around three shops, vintage shops and artisan workshops we stop for a stop at Bar Marani for a coffee under the pergola. This is the center of life in the neighborhood, the market is held every day in the adjoining "piazzetta" and in the evening we meet in front of the Church of the Immaculate Conception or the Tibur cinema. Here once Pasolini and Moravia sat at the tables of the Pommidoro restaurant. Between the famous Verano Monumental Cemetery, between tombstones of famous personalities and the Basilica of San Lorenzo, between the largest university in Europe and Villa Mercede San Lorenzo, it is a neighborhood in constant cultural ferment

** Exhibitions, Ateliers, Laboratories and many interesting Projects on Contemporary Art ** Get off Via dei Marrucini, in Via Tiburtina turn left and after 80m turn right into Via degli Ausoni, the entrance is at vivico 7 on your left In the heart of the San Lorenzo district, the former Pastificio Cerere. An important example of industrial archeology that lives on thanks to the artists who transformed it into their home and their ateliers. The history of reconversion begins already at the dawn of the seventies. The spaces of the building are rented to artists who transform it into a place to live and work. In the early Eighties, thanks to the Ateliers exhibition (curated by Achille Bonito Oliva), the Pastificio opens its doors to the public for the first time and from this moment, every year more, it becomes a cultural reference point of the Capital frequented by artists, critics, exponents of the show and many others. In 2002, it was decided to equip the pasta factory with a space, always open to the public, for contemporary art. It is thanks to the Pastificio Cerere Foundation, founded in 2005, that today it is possible to take numerous courses in art, painting, photography and visit the permanent installation to get closer and closer to contemporary art, especially its Roman sphere. www. pastificiocerere .it /en/plan-your-visit

From Via dei Marrucini get off in Via Tiburtina and turn left, go straight on Via Tiburtina for about six hundred meters, go straight on to Piazzale del Verano, at the end of the square you will find the entrance to the Church next to that of the cemetery. Rome is full of churches, each hiding small and big secrets to discover the history and architecture of a magical city. One of these is San Lorenzo fuori le mura, one of the oldest churches, which dates back to the fourth century AD. preserving original elements just like its catacombs, which can still be visited today. At the entrance we can admire a fantastic portico, the three-nave basilica with the wonderful "Cosmatesque" floor is composed of two basilicas on two levels, with the upper one transformed into a presbytery, and then again you can visit the characteristic kiosk. The basilica of San Lorenzo Fuori le Mura (also known as San Lorenzo al Verano) is one of the "Seven churches", object of pilgrimages during the Jubilees since 1300. It is in this very place that some scholars claim that the Holy Grail is hidden, the object of the cult film “The Da Vinci Code” with Tom Hanks. Entrusted to San Lorenzo in 258 by Pope Sixtus II, the chalice in which Jesus drank the wine during the Last Supper, would be buried together with the holy martyr.

Walk to the Imperial Forums duration: 50m distance: 4km Get off Via dei Marrucini and turn right onto Via Tiburtina. After 500m you will meet the Aurelian Walls, built between 200 and 300 AD. by the emperor Aureliano to defend Rome, the capital of the empire, from possible attacks by the barbarians. From here you can admire, continuing on the right, before Porta San Lorenzo (Porta Tiburtina, whose history begins long before the Aurelian Walls) and then at a short distance the Arch of Sixtus V, inserted in the Felice aqueduct that overlaps the Aurelian Walls themselves. Continuing, it is possible to find an access to climb above the Walls and walk for a short distance admiring the view from both sides. Continue on Via Marsala for 800m to the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a magnificent baroque / neo-classical style church, decorated with magnificent mosaics, truly incredible frescoes and vaults with golden architectural elements. Continuing, turn left at Largo Largo Giovanni Montemartini and continue along Viale Enrico de Nicola where on the right you can find the National Roman Museum and Palazzo Massimo alle Terme Neo-Renaissance palace with a classical art collection including sculptures, mosaics and gold jewelry. At the entrance of the National Roman Museum at the Baths of Diocletian there is the suggestive Colossal Crater, as well as the historical and artistic value, a majestic crater, surrounded by other interesting archaeological finds, welcomes visitors to the museum. The large park embraced the thermal baths that could accommodate thousands of people at the same time, in a path that also consisted of several gyms, four libraries, a gigantic swimming pool in addition to the typical environments of a thermal plant: frigidarium, tepidarium, calidarium ... A historical park in which to immerse yourself completely to look, listen, study and be amazed. Then turn right and take Via Cavour, with its fantastic nineteenth-century palaces, which leads to Via dei Fori Imperiali and on its way crosses the districts of Castro Pretorio and Monti. At the center of Via Cavour on the left you can admire the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. Wonderful basilica of ancient foundation. Already the eighteenth-century Baroque façade is awe-inspiring for its elegance and grandeur, but it is inside that there is a mammoth and magnificent nave covered by an impressive and very rich gilded coffered ceiling and on the sides precious mosaics of the fifth century (probably the first figurative cycle that appeared in a Roman church). And then two simply wonderful chapels. A curiosity not to be missed: under the main altar there is a chapel where there is a beautiful crystal reliquary, inside which - it is said - the remains of the cradle of the baby Jesus are kept. Towards the end of via Cavour we can immerse ourselves in the small alleys of the Monti district is an eclectic district in the city center, with bohemian and classic elements. The squares and side streets are lined with trattorias, chic wine bars and original vintage boutiques that attract tourists. Via Cavour, finally, directly overlooks the Imperial Forums that extend from the right, Piazza Venezia, to the left where you can visit the Colosseum and the Arch of Constantine.

If you are in San Lorenzo you cannot avoid spending at least half an hour here for a coffee, a bitter, an ice-cold Peroni at reasonable prices and letting yourself chat about adventures, misadventures and daily sentimental worries. Vintage bar in the neighborhood which still retains all its charm, its spontaneity and its beauty thanks to a pergola covered in vines with the most coveted outdoor tables in the neighborhood. It's a shame that it closes early in the evening, but that's part of the charm too.
