Drinks & Nightlife

O'Carroll's is a local's bar that serves decent food and has a front porch that's great for watching a very slow world go by in the summer. This is our must-stop place after adventures in the Rubies. They have locally-brewed beer on tap (Ruby Mountain Brewery's Angel Creek Amber). Don't expect gourmet food, but the reuben sandwich and French dip are good.

It can get noisy and crowded, but the vibe is fun and they have a wide variety of microbrewed beers on tap, including locally-brewed offerings from Ruby Mountain Brewing. Their pizza is the best in town.

Food Scene

Luciano's offers good and consistent food, some of which he sources locally. Watch for the Kennedy Ranch chicken specials in the summer - he makes magic happen.

Their Cornish pasties are amazing. Eat 'em hot at the bakery, or get a dozen to go to take with you hiking or on the road. You don't see these every day!

The Lamoille Farmer's Market features food and other agricultural products grown by local farmers and ranchers. The market features locally grown meats, fruits and veggies, hand crafted cheese and breads, local honey, as well as products made from beeswax, locally grown wool and locally produced goats milk. The market itself is held at the historic Lamoille Schoolhouse, with a big green lawn and playground equipment to entertain the kids while the grownups ooh and aah over steaks and veggies. Sometimes there’s live music, too. 8am-12n, first Saturdays of the month, June-October.

The best Mexican food in town comes from a food truck. They have two, one that parks at 3rd and Idaho, and one that parks at a gas station on East Idaho street. This is the classic stop to refuel after a big road bike ride.

Sightseeing

The Little Church of the Crossroads is one of the most photographed sites in the state, for good reason. It's stunning. The church itself dates from 1906 and was built by Sue's great uncle, David Weeks. The stained glass windows are very large and are glorious from the inside on a sunny day.

Arts & Culture

This new museum has an extensive collection of gorgeous cowboy gear, including bits and saddles from the world-renowned Garcia family. It's run by historian Jan Peterson, who knows more about area history than just about anyone alive. It's a fascinating window into a traditional lifestyle that continues in Elko County to this day.

This is a surprisingly awesome place, with local stuff ranging from mastodon bones to Shoshone artwork to Basque shepherding gear to mining and cowboy equipment. Some of it's kitschy, some of it's cool, all of it is a great window into Elko County's past. There's a whole wing of taxidermy, too, that doesn't have much to do with Elko County history but is still interesting to see. The traveling exhibits can be pretty amazing, too... for example, the museum recently hosted a collection of artwork by beloved Western author Will James. Wonderful stuff.

SnoBowl is a fun and funky local ski hill. Don't expect huge lines and snorkel deep powder. Do expect a very relaxed vibe, quality tailgaiting, and people having a great time celebrating snow. Tickets are cheap and rentals are available. Call the SnoBowl hotline during the winter for conditions and opening information - 775-777-7707. In the summer, SnoBowl becomes a bike park. A ten-mile stacked loop system is currently under construction, which will provide both cross country and lift served riding. When the lifts aren't running the trails are open to hikers and horsemen as well, making for a fun, close-to-town MTB outing.

These guys sweat the details. They're an outstanding heli-ski operation that goes way beyond the skiing. A new base lodge, CIA-trained chef, live music, massage... and unbelievable skiing in a mountain range you'll have largely to yourselves. The three day tours aren't cheap, but if you get on their wait list you might catch a one-day ticket that will make your ski season for you. There's a reason their clients have been coming back for 40 years... theirs is almost all repeat business, and if you can snag a seat you'll understand why.
