Built in 1930-1940 for Federal project to create Fontana Lake & Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Creation forced communities that had been in their homes generations to leave. Old Hwy 288 was buried beneath deep waters of Fontana Lake. Hwy 288 was replaced with Lakeview Drive on the North shore of Fontana Lake giving access to old family cemeteries, but Lakeview Drive fell victim to environmental issues and construction stopped and never resumed, giving it the unofficial name "The Road to Nowhere". The Park Service still ferries groups of county residents across Fontana Lake to visit family cemeteries during the summer.
