Nylon is a legendary bar in the heart of Kapana, a favourite spot for Plovdiv’s bohemians and the city’s artistic visitors. Long after the bar’s opening, its façade was covered in nylon sheets giving it an underground look - hence the name of the bar. Today you can still sing Queen songs along with strangers, smoke cigarettes indoors and remember our typical old-fashioned loos which have evoked the exclamation “Someone must have stolen the toilet seat!” in some of our foreign friends. When it’s not raining, the rooftop of the bar can be opened to let in some pleasant fresh air.

The bar is right next to the Central Postal Station and exhibits beautiful collections of postal stamps and old telephones. They take pride in making some of the best cocktails in town - classic, variations of them, as well as their own recipes. Wednesdays are devoted only to the cocktails they invent themselves - you can try them only then. Post Bar has promised that soon they would offer photos of Plovdiv as seen by young photographers turned into beautiful postcards you can send to your close ones by putting them in the boxes below the bar.

It’s wonderful there is still a reason to keep returning to the building of the former “Geo Milev” cinema - one of our favourite spots to see good films during our turbulent teenage years. Apart from the bar’s fantastic bohemian atmosphere, smoothies, homemade cakes and Sunday brunch, you will have the chance to walk around the area of the railway station and admire the sycamore trees in its vicinity. Sometimes Kinocafe will also organize variously-themed second-hand bazaars.

Barabana (The Drum) - This is our alternative option for good morning coffee in Kapana. It is named after the music lessons for children above the cafe. In the morning, you can at times hear the sound of the drum or the flute coming from the second floor. The baristas are from Greece and are indeed masters of good frappe and coffee. The interior carries a modern spirit, and service is warm and friendly.

Right now this is probably the most beloved and visited restaurant in our city not just by Plovdiv citizens, but also its guests. Try the risotto with veal cheeks, the meatballs named after a Bulgarian pop singer from the not so distant past, and the rakiya, and make sure you book your table several days earlier, because hardly ever can you be lucky enough to find one vacant by chance.

The restaurant offers gourmet national and European cuisine. Located in a beautiful house at the entrance of the Old Town, its interior is impressive for the classic, Vienna-style furnishing from the 1930’s. There is a splendid summer garden with wrought-iron furniture and a fantastic view of the city. Remember to take a look at the gallery and its rich collection of originals by Genko Genkov, Slona and other prominent Bulgarian artists.

Exquisite international cuisine with attention to detail and food presentation. The restaurant is housed in one of the emblematic buildings in Plovdiv’s main street - the building of the titan Atlas punished to carry the sky on his shoulders. Memory is one of our favourite higher-class restaurants in the city. The ambience suggests that you put on an evening dress and high heels or a formal shirt and jacket. The bar has a grand piano and often evenings are accompanied by pleasant music. There is a big garden where the atmosphere is not that sophisticated. The menu is seasonal and almost everything you would want to try is delicious and served with care and style, and the wine list is really remarkable. We recommend you garnish your dish with their homemade bread served in a paper bag and finish with their Memory cake. On weekdays they also offer lunch menu at a reasonable price.

Probably the best summer garden with good cuisine in town. Spending a carefree evening in the garden outside is somewhat in contrast with the sort of sophisticated atmosphere inside the restaurant itself. Ivan Vazov is one of the most beautiful streets in Plovdiv. You can begin your walk at the Central Station and reach as far as the Party Headquarters and the beginning of the Tsar Simeonova garden. The neighbourhood to the right of the street (if walking from the station towards the garden) is famous for its old tobacco warehouses, some of which are in a dire condition, but still impressive for their architecture and spirit. Sometimes, while walking along them, we can still smell the tobacco from Dimov’s novels. Either side of the street is in the shade of huge sycamore trees. And if you happen to need a new pair of shoes, you’d be just in the right spot!
