The forest was planted to 'suck up' (choupar) flood waters from the River Mondego. It is a beautiful place to stroll in rain or shine, and there is a kiosk from which to buy drinks and snacks.

The Centre for cross-country cycling and running is only a 10 minute walk from the house, and a good place to ask about hiking and cycling routes around the area.

Although there is an observatory here, it is worth driving up to the mountain ridge where the landscape and the wind turbines majestically dwarf man... On many occasions I have taken a picnic up there and enjoyed the view and cooler air in summer. about a 10-15 minute drive from the house.

The city of Tomar is small but beautiful. The place is famous for it's connection to the Knights Templar, and the stronghold they built is truly awe inspiring. It is about an hour's drive form the house, and worth a visit.
