Sightseeing

Before there was the Empire State Building, there was the Reynolds Building, which served as the inspiration for the design of the more famous successor in NY. Originally the headquarters of Reynolds tobacco, this art deco hotel is a trendy place to stop in for a drink and get a taste of what Winston-Salem looked like in its heyday in the 1930s. http://www.thecardinalhotel.com/boutique-winston-salem-hotel-photos/#rec

A little drive away (little, like over an hour), but this quaint town was the hometown of Andy Griffith, and the inspiration for his iconic TV show about a sleepy town called Mayberry (see the play on words?) There are fun sights, museums, etc. devoted to the actor and the show that put Mt. Airy on the map. Fun fact, if you are a fan of the show and you remember references to Mount Pilot, well, you will pass the real Pilot Mountain on your way up 52 North to Mt. Airy.

If you visit Old Salem, do not neglect to catch a picture of the big coffee pot. It's... well, it's just a big coffee pot, but you know; you gotta get pictures of this stuff when the opportunity arises.

Just the latest in micro breweries where Winston-Salem hip hang out. It's BYOF (food), but usually there is a food truck parked nearby, if you really need to eat.

Parks & Nature

Muddy Creek Greenway is a 3 mile-long flat paved asphalt trail that is perfect for a walk, jog, or bike ride. There is a 1.5 mile branch that comes off the trail that can be accessed just over 1 mile from the house. If you drive out of the development, up Glousman Rd, but then turn right on Alistair, follow that to the T and turn right, and the trail head is on the left. This is a great spot for kids- it is an easy ride on bikes, and there is a playground and dog park along the trail. https://www.traillink.com/trail/muddy-creek-greenway/

Old Salem is... well, old Salem. Settled by the Moravians in 1766, many buildings are original, including Salem Academy, one of the oldest girls' boarding schools in the U.S. (established 177). Enjoy seeing tour guides in period costumes and demonstrating many crafts and trades from the 18th century. The Tavern at Old Salem is a great spot for dinner in a historic building. http://www.oldsalem.org/

If you want some quick Mexican fare, La Caretta is just 1.7 miles away. The food is good and super fast if you are in a hurry. Even though it is a very popular restaurant in this neighborhood, there is almost never a wait to be seated.
