At the summit of Mount Macedon is the Memorial Cross which commemorates those who gave their lives in the 1914 – 1918 war. Erected on a vantage point with glorious views, the Cross is 21 metres in height and 1001 metres above sea level, the original structure was unveiled in 1935, but due to storm and fire damage, it was replaced in 1995. After the Shrine of Remembrance, Mount Macedon Memorial Cross is considered to be the most significant war memorial in Victoria. The view from the cross takes in the entire southern plain towards Port Philip Bay. It is a view that even locals return to, time and time again. http://parkweb.vic.gov.au/explore/parks/macedon-r.p./things-to-do/mermorial-cross-reserve

Get soaked by the spray from lush Trentham Falls, Victoria's highest single-drop waterfall. Formed some five million years ago by molten lava rapidly cooling as it flowed along the old Coliban River valley, Trentham Falls plunges 32 metres over basalt columns onto the quartz gravel below. Deep in the Wombat State Forest, this moss-covered wonderland is especially magical in winter when every sleek rock and fern frond drips with water. The Trentham Falls Reserve, located on the Great Dividing Range, protects original vegetation in the area, including manna gum, messmate and narrow-leaved peppermint. Enjoy a picnic by the river – there are plenty of facilities, including picnic tables, barbecues and toilets nearby – or embark on one of the scenic walking tracks in the surrounding forest. http://www.visitvictoria.com/regions/Daylesford-and-the-Macedon-Ranges/Things-to-do/Nature-and-wildlife/Lakes-and-waterways/TV-Trentham-Falls.aspx

'Historically, Sanatorium Lake was purpose built to provide a water source to a hospital specialising in the treatment of tuberculosis, which was never built. Now the lake is a beautiful setting for a number of self-guided walking and horse-riding trails. Swimming is not permitted in the lake. A 250 metre walk from the car park along the Eco-Tourism Walking Trail takes visitors to an information shelter and the adjacent lake. Other picnic areas and walking trails are located near the lake. Sanatorium Lake is a great place for families, with many natural features am easy walk with abundant wildlife and natural bush land. There is signage along the walk as well as a display board at the lake which provides information on the forest environment. The best time of year to explore this area is in Spring and Summer. The walk is about 2.5km and passes through several vegetation types, including tall eucalypt forests and a wet fern gully. Access and parking is available at Days Picnic Ground, Lions Head Road carpark and Sanatorium Picnic Ground. The trail links with the 29 kilometre Macedon Ranges Walking Trail, which incorporates most of Mount Macedon’s other scenic highlights, including Camels Hump, Memorial Cross and lookouts with outstanding views to Port Phillip Bay, the You Yangs and the Dandenong Ranges.'

'Hanging Rock has fit in so much over 6 million years… from a sacred place for local indigenous people and backdrop to Joan Lindsay’s book Picnic at Hanging Rock and Peter Weir’s film of the same title, to a colourful host of music concerts, markets and popular horse races, the Rock tells many tales about the history of the Macedon Ranges. Hanging Rock, or Mount Diogenes as it’s also known, is a rare volcanic formation near the townships of Woodend and Mount Macedon. One of the best examples of a volcanic plug or mamelon in the world, it has been exposed to considerable weathering and erosion, resulting in a conglomeration of unusual rock formations. Hanging Rock is about discovery and the Hanging Rock Discovery Centre is the perfect place to start. Gain a fascinating background on the area’s history, mystery and geology with hands-on interpretive displays and informative panels. There is so much more to do at Hanging Rock than just walking up the Rock. Families can gather in the large shady picnic grounds and play games on the wide expanses of lawn or have coffee and a quality sit-down meal in the cafe. Walks can be taken on the trails and paths that weave through the reserve past local flora and fauna, or take a fishing rod and try your luck in the dam, which is regularly stocked with fish (don’t forget your licence).' Mount Towrong Vineyard is a small family owned and operated vineyard. Migrating from the Veneto region of Italy, the Cremasco family have brought with them their love of food and wine, and this passion continues today. George and Deirdre began planting in 1996, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. In 1999 we added Nebbiolo and in 2005, Prosecco. The vineyard is at 600 metres, with views of Mount Macedon and Mount Towrong. Terracing the vineyard has allowed us to maximise the use of the slopes, and by practising sustainable farming techniques, we harvest high quality grapes with low yield to obtain the best possible fruit. Located in the village of Hesket, the vineyard at Hesket Estate was first established in the 1980’s. Further expansion and refinement occurred in the 1990’s when the Hudspeth Stevenson family purchased the property. The vineyard is at an elevation of 660 metres above sea level and just 5km from Hanging Rock. Hesket Estate is today a boutique cool climate vineyard specialising in the varieties of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling. The 2008 Pinot Noir won gold medal, People’s Choice and Top of Class awards at the 2012 Macedon Ranges Wine Exhibition. The 2008 Chardonnay won Gold medal and People’s Choice award at the 2010 Macedon Ranges Wine Exhibition. In addition to these estate grown wines a Gewurztraminer produced from the Straws Lane Vineyard and a Heathcote Shiraz are available. Proprietors, the Hudspeth Stevenson family utilise modern viticulture techniques using the grey and red loam soils of the beautiful Hesket Kerrie Valley. Such techniques yield grapes of exceptional quality and character. All grapes are handpicked. Tasting and sales of these fine wines in this peaceful garden setting will allow you to experience the lifestyle of a truly boutique vineyard. 'The Hanging Rock Winery is located 3km from the iconic local landmark, Hanging Rock. It was established in 1983 by John & Ann Ellis, who between them came to the region with a wealth of experience and a dream to make Australia’s first traditional method, cool climate sparkling wine. They discovered that the Macedon Ranges was perfect, it is now known to be Australia’s coolest mainland growing region and is just 1 hour from Melbourne. During the early 80’s they became some of the contemporary pioneers of both the Macedon Ranges and the Heathcote Grape Growing regions. They settled on a beautiful property in the hamlet of Newham which looked over both Hanging Rock and Mount Macedon. At the time it was a bare block of land but over the last 30 years they have developed it into the largest winery in the region. Today the winery is run by John & Ann’s daughter and son, Ruth & Robert. Having literally grown up in the same building as the winery they have a deep-rooted knowledge and passion for the winery and the industry. Although the focus of the winery has always been wines from the Macedon Ranges and Heathcote, the family also brings in some fruit from other regions so that they can offer a wide range of wines covering most styles and price points. Today there are over 20 wines on tasting, including many that are exclusive to cellar door and mail order customers. Recently their focus was widened to include Hanging Rock Beef and a Speckle Park Stud. John has taken on breeding Speckle Park cattle on the property, both for stud cattle and cross breads to supply high quality meat in cellar door. The animals grown for meat and sold in cellar door are 24 months or older, grass fed and sustainably grown.'
