Sightseeing

Have you ever seen where a river begins? Big Springs is where the North Fork of the Snake river originates from. You can see the water bubbling up from the ground. The spring produces over 120 million gallons of water each day. This is the spawning ground for rainbow trout and you can often see large trout under the bridge. A .5 mile handicap-accessible trail offers wildlife viewing of osprey, bald eagles, waterfowl and the occasional moose, white-tailed deer, and muskrat. Johnny Sacks Cabin is a short walk from the parking lot.

One of the earliest settlers in this area, Johnny Sack built this cabin entirely himself and his workmanship is amazing. The volunteers offer insightful information about the history of the cabin and history of Island Park. Open 10-4, entrance by donation.

The road up Sawtell Mountain is a scenic drive from valley sagebrush meadows up to an alpine peak with magnificent views of the surrounding areas. From the top, visitors can see the Island Park Caldera, Island Park Reservoir, Henry’s Lake, and on clear days as far as Yellowstone National Park, the Centennial Valley and Madison Valley in Montana. The Grand Tetons in Wyoming and the Pioneer Mountains in Montana are also visible in the distance. Wildflowers provide a background of spectacular colors throughout the spring and summer, especially in the subalpine meadows along the way. The Sawtell Peak Trailhead is one mile down from the peak and is one of the best hiking trails in the area for wildflower and landscape viewing.

Step back in time to the gold rush era! The very much alive ghost towns, Virginia City and Nevada City, are frozen in time. In the 1880s, they were the two major centers of Commerce in what was known as one of the "Richest Gold Strikes in the Rocky Mountain West”. When the gold ran out, there was still enough left so that homes and businesses were occupied, but there was not enough wealth to remodel the buildings. So they froze, and now represent the whole Victorian gold mining era, and the true and original Old West.
