Food Scene

This is our favourite winery to visit - and one of the closest to the house. You can sit on the terrace overlooking the vines or in the garden and take your dog, or go more formal dining inside. The Pinot Gris and Chardonnay are just wonderful examples of local wines. The staff are friendly and happy to give you a tasting. Food is a little pricey, we often go for a late afternoon glass of wine and a piece of cheese :)

Wonderful, fresh, local and inventive food - whether you're up for the full tasting menu or selecting a few dishes a la carte you're unlikely to eat dishes as good as this anywhere else in the area. It's a special treat to eat here, so worth booking for special occasions. The wines are wonderful, so worth even dropping in for a tasting.

Laid back, wood fired pizzas, outdoor bench seating overlooking the stunning Main Ridge vines - this is a perfect spot to bring friends, kids or family groups (worth booking if there's a large group). Amazing in winter, too - when they do mushroom picking tours and delicious mushroom pizzas to accompany their pinot.

A range of delicious cheeses, which you can taste and buy. It's a lovely spot tucked away at the end of a bushy lane so worth the drive, too. They sell beautiful wooden cheese platters, which we've given as gifts to friends and family, too.

Merricks General Store is a 10 minute drive from Somers, but a lovely place to stop-in for coffee and cake in the morning or the afternoon, or even a delicious lunch. We meet friends there as a handy meeting spot and the menu is great - plenty for kids, vegetarians and gourmet lovers alike. They sell local wines, olive oils and other local produce.

Parks & Nature

This is a wonderful Kangaroo Spotting site. Head towards the end of the day towards dusk or when the shadows are starting to get longer and within one km of the start of this section of the walk, you are likely to see kangaroos hopping in their local habitat. It's a stunning bush walk and if you go the full way to Cape Shanck the dramatic coast is beautiful.

Stunning view over Port Phillip Bay just a few metres away from the crowded and concrete lookout at the top of the Arthur's Seat chairlift. The park is great for a stroll, we've occasionally spotted kangaroos here. But the views are the main attraction.

Arts & Culture

Outdoor sculpture park where you can walk with your dog or have kids run around. There's some wonderful pieces of sculpture set within the gardens. Then you have the cafe and a small indoor gallery if the weather is not so good.

Shopping

Balnarring is a great centre for everything you're likely to need. A great supermarket (IGA) with everything from local fruit and veg to French cheese and all the grocery items you could need. There's a terrific local butcher, post office, newsagent and bakery. For coffee, we go to Village People and sit outside.

Essentials

Hastings is the closest place for petrol and is handy for all kinds of essentials with a Coles, a Woolworths and a Kmart. There's also some take-away shops in Hastings - Fish & Chips which you can eat overlooking the harbour; noodles or pizza are all available at very reasonable prices.
