Sometimes it's great to carbo load. Not nearby, but downtown.

Sometimes, you just want a cannoli. It's crowded and crazy, and another Boston institution. And walking around the North End is fun. These are best fresh, and eating it at Mike's formica tables is the way to go.

This is one of my favorites. There's a great bar by the same restaurant upstairs. It's not well marked, and is worth it.

Drinks & Nightlife

This is considered one of the best in town. A little noisy, a little crowded, but the real deal.

Not much more to say. Don't miss it. Even the bleacher seats and family-friendly zones are fun.

You can walk all or some of this, eat and shop along the way. It's a must, and for good reason.

Parks & Nature

Almost no one knows about this place -- we used to live in Gloucester. There's some easy hiking, and great beauty in the surrounding towns on the North Shore. Richardson's Ice Cream is the local dairy -- always good, too.

Great to ride a bike from Newton down along the Charles River, to the Esplanade. You can go down on one side, cross over by the Science Museum, and come back on the other side of the river. It's a nice 10-mile jaunt, on a paved biketrail the entire way.

This is one of the many beautiful parks around Boston. It's a bit of a drive, but worth it. Go early (there's a small parking lot), and bring a picnic!

We just discovered this. A real beach, in the middle of the city, is a mile away. At Castle Island, can walk down a causeway so you have a bay on one side, and the ocean on the other, and the planes flying into Logan overhead. All smack in the middle of the city.

Sightseeing

It's a classic bit of beauty, with spectacular flowers, funded by a private group. And the ducklings from Make Way for Ducklings, and the swan boats in season. It's around the corner from Newbury Street's shopping, the Back Bay's tree-lined streets, and Beacon Hill, all worth exploring.
