"The Nation's Oldest Mexican Restaurant in continuous operation by the same family." This Mexican restaurant has been open since 1922. (when the population of Tucson was only around 20,000 people, or about 1/40th the size it is now) 1922 is only ten years after Arizona became a state... So it is an example of the rich Mexican cultural history in Tucson, and puts a little perspective on why Tucsonans can't understand the big fuss in Washington these days about Mexicans taking over our country. The way we remember it - This area was part of Mexico before it was the US, and we love our Margaritas! This is popular tourist spot serving typical Sonoran food..And has a wait at busy times.. But they have decent food, especially Carne Seca and Carne Asada !! For a more "foodie" ( and a bit more expensive) experience try the nearby restaurants owned by the same family "Charro Steak" or "Charro Del Rey" (Mexican-influenced Seafood)

Doug Levy is a creative chef and a genuine nice guy. He was a friend of my sisters growing up. we go to Feast a few times a year. They catered our wedding. It is not inexpensive, but not insanely $$$. Doug is always trying something new. If you are adventuresome, go for it. We love it. A few weeks ago we had an astounding beef tenderloin in a beet reduction with blue cheese. YUM. Doug will greet your table, unless its too busy so if you want to know what people like most that night, ask him! They have a very extensive wine list too. Tell him I said HI!

Note: call before going as they may limit access due to Covid19 An iconic Tucson tradition and "old style" resort.. 15 min walking distance from the house! Go a half hour before dinner and stroll the gorgeous 14 acre grounds. Classic dining room in Mission style. The lawn may be set up for croquet or table tennis. Relax in the library near the restaurant. I'd choose the $75 tastings menu with wine pairings (if you are paying!). Save room for tiny but delicious "amuse bouche" desserts. For less $, go to the bar for drinks, breakfast, brunch or late night. It's classic 1930's Tucson, a time capsule.- think "Casablanca". On weekends there's a live piano player playing old standards- The bar has a lighter menu, and you can sit outside by the lawn if you like. Food is pretty good not outstanding, but the peaceful atmosphere is what we come for. Kitchen open till 11:30ish PM.

Guadalajara (Wah-dah-lah-har-a) is popular with my son and tourists. They make fresh salsa tableside. Mariachis (typical mexican folk- polka band) cruise the dining room in small packs on weekends and will visit your table to play your favorite "corrido" or "ranchera" whether you like it or not. This is a plus not only because Mariachis are a unique part of Tucson's Mexican-influenced culture, but also if you find yourself hard pressed to make dinner conversation, you'll find the music is so loud it prevents any attempt at speaking. Thankfully a small tip will induce them to move on. Seriously, though have them play "Por Un Amor". (My favorite tearjerker.) Reservation helps on weekends.

Cheap eats. Eat a Sonoran Hot dog and you may get a heart attack but you will die happy. Mexican sodas! Open breakfast, lunch, dinner, and late night dinner. Update 5/2019 - Over the past year we feel the quality of the Carne Asada (grilled steak strips) has gone down at Guero Canelo. Still Ok, but we now prefer nearby BK's.

Parks & Nature

Water, wildlife, canyon. Walking, Hiking or tram tours. We have seen such native wildlife as muledeer, coyotes, bobcats and roadrunners here over the years and of course the ubiquitous cactus wrens and rabbits. Bike it during a few AM and PM hours. (Before 9 AM, after 5 PM.) Call before going to confirm. Good brakes, quick reflexes, strong climbing legs recommended. It's a short (3 mi) steep ride up -- a thrilling ride down. Unless you must suddenly swerve to avoid a pedestrian on the narrow path, and you hit your brakes, but only the front one works, so you go flying over your handlebars, breaking your fall with your (now broken wrist.) I won't tell you how I know this!

Visit our "Sky Islands"! Skiing in Winter (Call before you go, very seasonal). Stunning scenery! Temps are 30 degrees cooler at the summit. 3 hours round trip min. 5 hours would be better. Take the ski-lift to the top even if there's no snow for views and a fun ride! Hiking - Short - Sykes Knob Medium- Meadows trail, Lemmon rock Longer- Butterfly trail, Green mountain, Wilderness of rocks. Awesome viewpoints: For Night time city lights or sunset views just go to Babat D'aag - This is a shorter drive (30 mins?) from the house. Daytime: Windy point, (also for sunset). Picnic - Inspiration rock, Bear Canyon or Marshall Gulch Restaurants - Cookie Cabin / Sawmill at Summerhaven

Great views - not too far a drive from the house (20 mins?) If you like to hike hard its a great trail if you and gets steeper later in the hike- So I hear because I usually only hike up the first 30 mins to hour of this trail, which though it climbs is not too hard. I like to time it so I come down as the sun sets for maximum beauty. Good for Fall through Spring. Its pretty hot starting mid to late April. Bring Water. and Go really early in the day or just before sunset if its hot.

I prefer this place to Yoga Oasis personally, because its a smaller studio with a more peaceful vibe - class size of about 20 max. Also a "power flow" place. Especially good in the cooler season because they have a "warm steam" system which is really relaxing. Not as hot as bikram, about 80-82 degrees.
