Sightseeing

This is the best overlook with views of the castle and the river and (imitation) golden gate bridge (which was actually designed by the SF Bay Bridge engineer but painted to look like the GG). There's an inexpensive cafe/bar where the staff are great and multi-lingual. Graca neighborhood is great, historic.

History museum of the colonial history of Portugal, the African resistance in the 1970-80s, the bloodless revolution of 1974, in a former political prisoner jail. Free to students, inexpensive and well worth the entrance cost. Located off the 28E cable car line in Alfama, so part of the day of exploring alFama and the castle.

Super contemporary art gallery and tattoo parlour, artist residency in a nice area (nice park overlooking the river nearby) staffed by an interesting guy trying to make an inpact. Wozen stands for World Citizen. www.wozenstudio.com and they often host interesting discussions and artist talks in English or Portuguese.

Getting Around

This is the greatest way up the hill to our place. If you are down by Rua Sao Jose, and don't want to walk up the hill on Rua Telhal, you can take this charming cable car up to Torel Park, then walk downhill to our place from there. Great views from the Torel Park.
