We come here a lot in the summer. Good for lunch or dinner – reasonable prices and good coffee. The setting is by the River Dart and another popular spot for locals chasing the last of the sun.

Housed in a 14th Century building - previously playing host to a toffee factory and a jazz bar - it has spent the better part of the last century as a restaurant. Food is slightly pricier than other places but worth it. Need to book early as it gets packed.

Also coffees, teas, baked goods from the parent bakery. You pay one amount and can top up your plate if still hungry.

Great veggie food. Always busy. Menus at this wonderful little place change daily according to what’s in season and available locally, and even non-veggies will not complain when faced with a choice of brazilnut moussaka, mushroom and goat’s cheese pasta or Mexican red bean tortillas. Wednesday night is curry night and there’s live music on a Friday night. Families are particularly welcome (toys and books provided), as are dogs, and the courtyard garden’s lovely too. Willow sums up Totnes perfectly – friendly, laidback, a bit alternative and very, very green.

Access from the top of town. Leechwell Lane leads to the side entrance of Leechwell Garden, on the site of an ancient orchard, with its sunny herb garden, pergola, wide expanse of lawn, a series of rock pools, public art and a large play structure for 5-12 year olds. Work is under way to improve the scheduled immersion pool and its surrounds. Leech Well, with its three troughs, is the source of water in the pool and stream, and is said to be one of the most ancient wells in Devon. It can be found further along Leechwell Lane after leaving the Garden.
