Good coffee - strong, hot and delicious, is very important in Maine. This coffee shop meets the demands of any big city coffeeholic. They serve very decent bagels too, and other breakfast and lunch food. Free wifi, of course.

Moving on to lunch and then dinner, the Homestead Kitchen is a long time Farmington staple with a large clientele from the local area. Come early for Sunday lunch or you may miss out on a table. Local musicians entertain - pleasingly - at dinner. Over the last couple of years the new chef has upgraded the menu with very good results, although we liked the older one too.

And over to neighboring Wilton for some very good Italian food at Calzolaio's, located in a former factory with an outside deck overlooking a small but energetic stream. A husband and wife team run this family restaurant. They continue to do menu upgrades. Friendly, competent service.

Just 45 minutes south of Farmington are the twin towns of Auburn and Lewiston, home to colleges, museums and restaurants. Davinci's is in the old Bates Mill building, lots of brick and beams as well as satisfying Italian and American food. Bring the whole family, there's something for everyone.

Also in a former mill building, Fish Bones gets lots of positive reviews for its seafood and American style cuisine. Some think it rivals the restaurants of Portland. That's something we could argue about as we make our way through the menu, but this restaurant will provide well cooked and easy food, with excellent service. We won't argue about that.

Longing for a steak that covers your plate? With a plump baked potato just waiting to be bathed in sour cream and butter? Hungry locals fill this diner/restaurant on weekend evenings; they've had the feedback from friends and family and in they come. Be sure to leave space for the chef's own fruit pies, with a scoop for that perfect finish. Coffee, wine, salad bar too.

Sightseeing

One of the first things to hit your mind's eye at the mention of Maine is a lighthouse, preferably surrounded by crashing waves and a giant jumble of rocks. This lighthouse is a real life postcard. Highly photogenic with all necessary attributes of a classic lighthouse, but also a charming little museum that was formerly the keeper's residence. Well trained and friendly docents will happily tell you stories of the past, though the museum has lots of informative and often poignant stories to tell. There's an excellent lobster roll vendor steps away in Fort William Park.

Step into history with a visit to this round wooden tower, built long ago to get first glimpse of sails on the horizon, heralding another important arrival for the busy port. Docents will fill you in on the many fascinating details of the building and its purpose. Don't miss it! Step up the road afterwards for creative deliciousness at the Blue Spoon, just a block away.

A huge state park, just half an hour away from Kiwi Lodge. Too many activities and attractions to describe - here is one of the websites: https://visitmaine.com/things-to-do/parks-and-natural-attractions/mt-blue-state-park We have our favorite very short, kid-friendly hiking trail through the woods. Just half an hour long, with lots of lookouts, rocks to scramble over, information on what you are seeing, and wonderful views on every side. We'll give you directions in the handout we provide for our guests.

Hallowell is a small riverside town oozing with history and antiques. We've tried and enjoyed a couple of restaurants, Slates Bakery & Restaurant, and The Liberal Cup Restaurant. Both have good service and even better food. Only 30 minutes or so from Kiwi Lodge, through scenic, treelined roads with the inevitable lakes along much of the route. But the antiques! Make it easy on yourself and go to the large shop at the further end of the street parallel to the river. On the right, it is called Antiques Mall. There are many small shops inside the one large building. This could take a while. Budget a few hours for Hallowell!

Large second hand book store on Farmington's Main St. This place has a few comfortable chairs scattered around, and a toilet, so you know they understand serious bibliophiles! Well worth a visit even if you are not looking for anything specific. You will probably find it here!
