Parks & Nature

“Constructed using the drystone technique, the Premužić Trail is today considered a masterpiece of trail building. The route is laid out so as to provide the easiest possible access to the most rugged and inaccessible sections of north Velebit – Hajdučki i Rožanski Kukovi. The 57 km route runs along the mountain ridge from Zavižan to Baške Oštarije in central Velebit. As there are virtually no steep ascents, the route is also suitable for visitors unaccustomed to mountaineering. Branching off from the Premužić Trail are several paths that climb up to some of the most spectacular peaks of northe and central Velebit - Gromovača, Crikvena, Šatorina and others.”

Zavratnica is a 900 m long narrow inlet located at the foot of the mighty Velebit Mountains, in the northern part of the Adriatic Sea, 1 km south of Jablanac. The bay is about 50-150 m wide. Because of its natural values even in 1964 was declared a protected landscape, and since 1981 is an integral part of the Nature Park Velebit. At the begining of 20th century a promenade and terrace in the center of the bay were built to prevent further deterioration. To stop the torrents coming from the mountain in the the cascades and terraces cypresses, alpine pine, fig, holm oak and other trees were planted. Zavratnica is the habitat of 129 plant species, of which 100 indigenous.

“The main highlight of the area is its mosaic landscape with varied natural, cultural and historic sights. The best choice for leisure activities in a rural setting are the sub-mountainous villages set in picturesque valleys of Northern Velebit - Krasno and Kuterevo. Krasno is a small foothill village of Kuterevo with a population of around 570. The main occupation is agriculture and animal keeping, but the villagers are also well known for their wood handicrafts. Kuterevo is interesting for its well preserved rural architecture and folk traditions. Special attraction is the Kuterevo Bear Sanctuary where bear cubs can bee seen up close.”
