Food Scene

This is a cosy thatched roofed-pub with friendly staff and open fires. They serve Adnams beers and a nice range of wines and unexpectedly good quality food for such an unassuming country pub! The evening menu has elegant starters and mains, and the Sunday Roasts boast some of the best roast potatoes we've tasted. Ever.

An intimate restaurant with low ceilings with a modern feel and menu - and a 4 page-long gin list! We've had some lovely local fish dishes here and a beautiful chestnut risotto, all with elegant flavours but served in really decent-sized portions for hungry guests. The service is always attentive and welcoming too. Book in advance for Saturday nights or you won't find a table (this is the case for much of Southwold!)

Really unusual place to have lunch! It's half exotic plant garden centre, half restaurant/cafe so the tables are all set amongst the amazing tropical palms and succulents, and you can buy nearly everything around you! We had a delicious Shakshuka for breakfast with a choice of single origin coffee...and then bought too many cute plant pots, candle lanterns and succulents!

Great food and generous portions. This old building is full of character, much like the lovely market town of Beccles itself, but the menu and food is modern with classic British dishes alongside some asian and middle eastern plates. I'm not a dessert person but I was tempted by one of the gluten free options, which was amazing and very indulgent - and they're not small portions!

Sightseeing

This is a restored old pier, with the traditional entrance arcade now a listed building, but behind this is a modern pier with tasteful shops and cafes and a fantastically curious Under the Pier show. There's a lovely shop well worth a walk down to the end of the pier with tasteful homeware, cards and artwork. Then for a bit more silliness there's the famous oddities of local artist in the Under the Pier Show with a twist on traditional arcade games all with their own subtle and humourous social commentary! And of course there's the lovely view back to the shore of the long stretch of beach and traditional buildings of Southwold.

Intriguing location for a lighthouse, right in the middle of town! Great spot for some photos with cute colourful rows of cottages in the frame from the square beneath the lighthouse, and a great local pub The Sole Bay Inn just beneath it too.

Entertainment & Activities

The Adnams brand is known all over the UK for it's great ales produced locally to Southwold, and has now expanded into a number of gins, spirits and wines all under the Adnams name. You can book onto a tour at the old brewery and distillery in town to see how they make the beer or gin depending on your preference, and get a good taste of them too! There's also a fabulous Adnams shop with all the drinks as well as some lovely kitchenware and gifts just down the road.

Stunning heath land around the small village which has been lost to the sea over the years, with blooming purple heather through the late summer offering great photo opportunities on walks through the heath. The beach at Dunwich is also part of this National Trust designated area with it's unspoilt views.
