Parks & Nature

Some 640m above sea level, the mountain of Exomvourgo stands out among the Tinos' landmarks. At its base you will find the Catholic monastery Ieras Kardias (Sacred Heart), one of the most impressive attractions on the island. The fortress of Exomvourgo, at the peak, was once the highest in the Aegean, but it was besieged and destroyed by the Turks in 1715. From up high you can see not only Tinos, but also Samos, Ikaria, Naxos and Delos… breathe in the Aegean!

Sightseeing

Arnados is Tinos' highest village is on the south flank of the Kechrovouni Mountain, close to the Church museum where you can see old icons, books and other religious items.. Don’t leave the area before visiting the monastery of Kechrovouni (10th century) a big edifice looking like a fortified village. There you can see the cell of nun Pelagia, and a museum where several remarkable icons from the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as other important heirlooms, are kept. A breathtaking panorama is the backdrop to classical Tinos-style cooking with meat prepared with locally grown ingredients.

The picturesque settlement of Agapi lies in the shape of an amphitheatre on the edge of a valley. One of Tinos' most abundant brooks winds its way through the valley, which is dotted with well-preserved dovecotes. The arcades and the houses - with the pretty lintels above their doors and windows - play their part into making Agapi one of the most traditional villages of the island.

Volakas is a tiny village, located in the interior of the island, almost hidden in the middle of rounded, giant granite blocks, with houses that are built onto the rocks. It is one of the most interesting villages to explore, as its architecture is unique on the island. Many of its houses are actually built on top of the boulders! Although tiny in size, the village has two tavernas, a gift shop, a folklore museum, a small stone open-air theater and a few remaining basket weavers still making their sturdy artifacts. You can also find local honey, herbs, dried figs and tomatoes, capers and wine. Also interesting to view is the tiny Catholic village church next door to the folklore museum. It is exactly what you would expect a village church to look like! A footpath winds down the valley to Agapi village.

Kardiani, one of the most beautiful villages of Tinos that you shouldn’t miss, lies 16 km from Town and is the first village of Exo Meria. Situated on the slope of mount “Pateles” it enjoys a very nice view towards the sea. Verdurous, with flowing waters, high platens, beautiful two story houses with picturesque staircases, flowery yards, limy paved streets, arches, it will certainly impress you. Three great churches stand out: At the edge of the village, Ayia Triada, at the center Koimisi tis Theotokou (Holy Mary’s Assumption) and at the other edge Kioura, in the foundations of which lies a refreshing spring.

Ormos Panormou is the seaport of Pyrgos village and one of the most beautiful destinations in Tinos. Ideal location with smooth traffic. It has a beautiful traditional little port with taverns all along. It is an ideal place to eat or even have a drink or coffee with view to the North side sea and the beautiful small island “Planitis”. Since, however, it is very close to the beaches Rochari, Aghia Thalassa and Kavalourko, you can plan your little excursion first to swim and then to eat. Quality in taverns is almost equally high. However prices range a lot. So, make sure you carefully select by seeing more than one price lists and asking for availability of what is contained in these before you sit.

Pirgos is an impressive village and the largest village of Tinos. The sculptures, the springs, and the reliefs that decorate houses and public spaces give it the appearance of an outdoor museum. In its square, which is always full of visitors during the summer, the marble spring built in the year 1784 and the huge plane tree that was planted in the year 1859 stand out. As you walk you will see the metropolitan church, Agios Nikolaos (1874), the cemetery with the famous funereal inscriptions made by well-known sculptors, the museum of Marble Crafts, the Museum ofthe Artists of Panormos and the Giannoulis Chalepas Museum.
