The closest great restaurant is Kitsch, about 4 blocks away. It does modern Asian-Australian and is quite hip. It’s open in the evenings.

Best breakfast: Sayers, on Newcastle St. They have creative twists on the norm but are always packed to prepare to squeeze in.

Amazing little wine bar with French eats – terrines, pates, cured fish, croquet monsieurs, cheese platters, etc. It’s next to Yelo café, heading north towards Scarborough Beach Rd (turn left up Oxford St, it’s a 10min walk). Open from 4pm til late.

Shopping

There’s a Woolworths supermarket in Mt Hawthorn, which is up the other end of Oxford St, away from the city, and left on Scarborough Beach Rd. It’s in excellent The Mezz village, where there are other shops, a restaurant, fish and chips, chemist, bakery, butcher, free wifi, etc. It’s cheaper and is open til 9pm on weeknights, then til 6pm Saturdays and Sundays. The Mezz can be hard to see from the road, so look out for the Dome café on the corner at the traffic lights and head in via the stairs/lift or drive behind the Dome to the car park.
