Food Scene

In the village square of old Perithia, less than a minute's walk from The Merchant's House, run by a brother and sister, Alkinoos & Alexia, mother too Diamantina & Alexia's daughter Elina is often around too. Best in the evenings, but lunchtime good too, just ensure there isn't a group booking so you get to enjoy your time there and a little more attention. Mention you're staying at The Merchant's House. They do a great homemade ginger beer, often their own red wine, there's a garden at the back and ask whats been cooked fresh on the day. They have wifi too if ours is being a little hit or miss.

Located in the village square, Thomas & Vasso run this small but enchanting taverna which has a great reputation for its food and hospitality. Mention that you're staying at The Merchant's House and check what Vasso recommends you try from the choice of home cooked dishes, salads and starters.

Gabriel's Steps, is literally at the bottom of the steps from The Merchant's House - run by two brothers Kostas and Iannis, with mum often cooking a few special dishes though it's primarily a grill house. Friendly, and worth asking what's freshly made. Their main dishes, include bifteki (home made burgers) souvlaki, often sardines (if you fancy a light lunch) and their chips are cooked in olive oil. If you're staying say hello from us and they're happy that you visit even for a drink & snack. They have wifi too if ours is being a little hit or miss.

Fish Taverna by the sea & just 15-20 mins drive from the village on the way to Kassiopi. Ask for Spiros or Stamatis and say you're staying at The Merchant's House.

It's popular with the locals, open all year round (more or less) and the food quality is good, the prices very reasonable, family owned and reliable. We recommend (order in advance from Martha or Iannis) the Kontosouvli (spit roasted BBQ pork) comes with chips, and to start the spicy cheese, grilled mushrooms, salads, pita bread - try it all with Retsina (it's not how you may remember it, and it goes with the food.)

Actually it's Uncle Simos! Ask for Lena, mention us - it's a more upmarket restaurant, so Greek with a twist, worth asking what are the fresh dishes or fishes, nice starter and good wine list. Located looking across the harbour in Kassiopi.

Popular taverna in Kassiopi, slightly more upmarket and great views across to the old fortress. Best to book ahead. Greek but with a lot of home made dishes and often with a good twist on the normal presentation or cooking.

If you're staying in, or visiting, Corfu town there's a few restaurants we'd recommend. Salto is certainly one of them. Wine Bar with interesting and varied menu, mixing up some great tastes and produce that combine the best of Greek cuisine with their own special cooking skills and 'twists' for a great menu. Naturally their wines are superb too + the owners Pavlos & Natasha are excellent hosts as are all of the waiters & waitresses. Mention The Merchant's House Old Perithia, or Mark & Saskia.

Aris the chef is an absolute creative, and a total foodie so you're going to get some amazing dishes and experience one of the best chefs in Corfu. It's an upmarket restaurant, best to book, check out the menu beforehand perhaps, and there's great selection of wines + a lot of knowledge about what's on the menu. Do mention us if you go and certainly one place to visit if you're in Corfu town.

It's not big but it's a delightful restaurant, speciality is fish - the dishes are both creative and often remarkable. Good selection of wines, excellent attention to detail, more on the upmarket side and certainly best to book. Mention Mark & Saskia form Old Perithia.

Ice Dreams [landmark for the turn to and from the road to Old Perithia] Spingos who created the company was a trained lawyer, who ‘discovered’ Italian ice-cream and then set up his own homemade ice-cream shop.

Everything Else

One of the many attractive beaches near to Old Perithia. Allow 25-30 minutes drive, then spend the day on Kerasia beach where the Rothschilds have a property to the left and land to the right, making it one of the best protected beaches in the north east. There's a taverna on the beach too, so your set for the day and en route you pass through Agios Stephanos with it's eateries, shops, boat hire (Giannis Boats - mention Mark & Saskia) and trendy bars.

Entertainment & Activities

Agios Spyridon [The closest beach to Old Perithia] To the right there’s a crazy golf & karting track near Pyramid taverna, but to the left there’s the beach, a small church and you can walk along the beach across an old wooden bridge and through a small nature reserve towards Acharavi. It’s a pretty walk, but you’ll probably want to turn back rather than go onto Acharavi. Also, beware of mosquitos later in the day as the sun goes down! You can hire boats there + pedalos...

The long sandy beaches of Kalamaki & Aproas. You’ll see various turns down to these beaches as you drive along the coastal road towards Kassiopi. The beach has shallow water out to about 30-40 metres and due to their size often not too crowded relative to the times of year, so feels spacious. A few tavernas are at hand when you fancy a bite to eat.

Kassiopi is quite a lively village harbour, you can visit the old fort which is located on a path to the left just before the main harbour. There are bars and places to eat, ATM’s + a number of shops. Restaurants include Uncle Simos (ask for Lena) Tabernaki or Petrino,. The Grill & Chill souvlaki bar is good for a simple inexpensive lunch (Giros) …and The Old School/Three Brothers is good taverna if you want something more substantial & good value (ask for Fondos or Barbara.) From the centre there’s an attractive coastal walk, passing by one or two beautiful beaches, Batteria is our favourite & has places where you can bathe on the rocks (can be a bit busy in high season.)
