This is the best spot for sourdough bread and fresh almond croissants. Great spot for a meal but even better if you are looking for a quick snack or coffee while watching the surf or ending a morning walk.

You won’t get a better spot for an afternoon view of the surfers with a drink in hand. The eclectic interiors create a rich and funky atmosphere. This place gets really busy at lunch time so you may have to book or pop in during the late afternoon for a drink and window seat. They also run “Easy tiger” which does takeaway burgers a few shops down.

A walk to Kalk Bay is not complete without stopping at The Brass Bell for a pizza or seafood. This restaurant is perched between the railwayline and the seashore so you can experience the waves crashing into the tidal pool while sipping on a cold beer. It gets very busy in tourist season so you may need to book in advance.

Fish Hoek beach is a lovely beach for children as the waves are calmer and it is often less windy than Muizenberg. The Bayside On Fish Hoek Beach restaurant is good for soft serve ice-cream or a casual breakfast or toasted sandwich.

Casa Labia is the former Muizenberg residence of Count and Countess Natale Labia. This Victorian building has been beautifully restored to reflect the splendour and grandeur of this marvellous Italian home. A leisurely lunch with chilled wine and a view over False Bay is a fabulous treat. Look out for one of the concerts, which range from classical to Jazz.

What a treat to have an organic butchery open up in Muizenberg. Great spot to pop in during an afternoon stroll of the village and pick up some quality meat, organic eggs, Lebanese dips and other treats ... right on your doorstep.

Entertainment & Activities

This is the kids favourite holiday activity, especially when all the cousins come along. It opens at 10. Choose a day that is not too windy as it can be chilly to have the cold wind blowing on the wet bodies.

Keen to join the fun and try out your surfing skills? Then pop into Lifestyle surf shop for lesson, which includes your surfboard, wetsuit and personal instructor. There are many other surf schools along the beachfront which I am sure are also great but Lifestyle is our favourite.

Kalk Bay is a must! it is a quaint and quirky harbour and suburb with loads of shops, restaurants, antique shops, galleries, etc. We like to walk from Muizenberg (but you can also drive or take the train). If you decide to walk, there is a beautiful walkway that takes you along the shoreline from Muizenberg to St James. The walkway can be found to the west of Surfer’s Corner (just beneath the Muizenberg train station). You can head through the subway at St James to the main road, and walk the last section to Kalk Bay along the road.

An early morning walk on the beach is the best way to start the day. Muizenberg has a fine long beach and you can walk for kilometres if you so wish. You can also enjoy the sunrise over False Bay if you are up early enough. The row of colourful changing rooms on Muizenberg beach offer a great photo opportunity. There are also lifeguards her during the day if you are looking for a supervised place for the children to swim.

Arts & Culture

Perhaps this is more of a thrill for South Africans than foreigners as we don't often get the opportunity to see contemporary art in an awesome structure. Be sure to grab a coffee on the top floor and enjoy the views of the mountain. The queues were long when we arrived so we booked tickets online and were allowed immediate entry.

Great spot for craft beer and live music. We have only popped in for sundowners so we cannot comment on the late night entertainment ... but I am sure it wont disappoint.

Parks & Nature

We love to walk around the lake and go for a dip with the kids, especially when the beach is too windy. Pack a picnic and find a spot amongst the trees surrounding the lake. There are longer walks available and always breath-taking. If you have a wildcard then you can get in for free.

To me, Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is one of the most beautiful gardens in the world. It takes my breath away each time I visit. Not sure if it is the gorgeous mountain backdrop or the lush fynbos and indigenous planting, but every flowerbed, every path, every view is breathtakingly beautiful. There are also a few restaurants in the gardens to choose from. Look out for an evening concert for extra entertainment.
