Food Scene

This Modern British, Irish-influenced and well-travelled grill restaurant on Old Street roundabout is now led by Tarryn Bingle, following the sudden departure of chef-owner Niall Davidson. Sommelier Honey Spencer who worked at Noma Mexico, is in charge of a thrilling wine list, while the vast open kitchen is organised around a giant fire pit, often with a dissected hog positioned upright in it. New riffs are given to old classics: clams in pistachio beurre blanc; steak tartare with Guinness sauce; squid and bacon broth; and veal sweetbreads with cauliflower rarebit. Nuala appears to have marked a new stage in the evolution of British (and Irish) bistronomy.

Two chefs — Andrew Clarke and Jackson Boxer — have joined Shoreditch’s wood grill community. This is a restaurant inspired by “very, very drunken lunch” two summers ago at Boxer’s mother’s home, Pound Farm, in West Sussex, which is the source of much of the salads and vegetables. St Leonard’s — named after the church on the same street — will “attempt to create a high-summer afternoon in Sussex in a more urban setting”: the meeting of highly technical preparations and primal cooking of lamb legs, roasted ducks, and whole fish, grilled and roasted over fire. There’s a raw bar too from which oysters are offered three ways, alongside razor clam with peas.

Leroy is a wine bar and newly Michelin-starred restaurant from the team — Ed Thaw and Jack Lewens — who closed the Michelin-starred Ellory in Hackney. It is inspired by the Parisian “caves” (restaurant wine annexes) where head chef Sam Kamienko cooked before coming to London. Wines are selected from a “broad church,” where classics sit side-by-side with more new-wave, natural varieties. They also feature a number of the wines from Vigneti Tardis, their own winemaking project in Campania, Italy.

Selin Kiazim’s first solo restaurant is a paean to the chef’s Turkish-Cypriot heritage. The small dining room and bar is organised around an open kitchen which uses a wood oven and tiered grill to prepare some of the most ambitious modern Turkish food in the city. Pide (flatbreads) — marinated octopus with ricotta; or a classic lamb lahmacun — are served with a crisp, piquant pomegranate-dressed red cabbage salad with pickles; the regularly-changing grilled meats might include glazed lamb breast or half chicken served with preserved lemon and greens. Despire being in the middle of Shoreditch, Oklava has the warm atmosphere of a discreet neighbourhood restaurant.

If you're looking for a great bar in Shoreditch then you need venture no further than Callooh Callay. Not only is it skilled in the art of fine cocktails, but this place also hides a secret JubJub room where eccentricities flourish and you can chill in some sort of mod, 70s inspired purple clad pad. Basically, it's pretty damn cool.

If you've a quest to track down all the best places to drink beer in Shoreditch, The Draft House should be high up your list. A charming space filled with interesting characters and an eye-catching decor, pull up a stool and sample their special range of beer - each has been sourced with great effort and care. And what of the food? The pub also carries a strong selection of beer food, sharing plates and classic mains if you need a bite to eat.

Little gem of a cockail bar. Amost hidden (go down the stairs near the "Home" sign). I tend to always find a table available, and the space is not too noisy so you can actually carry on a conversation. The cocktails are really great. Oscar the owner is very friendly, and if you don't know what you want to order, just tell him and he'll recommend you something based on your taste.
