Within waking distance of the cottage (1.5 miles) Make a day of it. Visit the Saxon Church, Saxon Inn pub in Escomb and take a walk around the lakes. (The initial walk is along the road on Wigdan Walls Road which is a country Lane). You can walk on the grass verge or along the fields. Once you reach the main road, cross over and follow the signs for Escomb. On pavement from there on.
