In June and July you can see Shakespeare in the Park plays for free. They are some the best productions I have seen in NYC. Lines are ridiculous but try the online lottery for tickets.

Wait in line for (2) free tickets. Distributed at 12pm every day there is a public performance. Performance days will vary from week to week. Check the performance calendar for more information.
