On the outskirts of Cushendall village is the ruin of Layd Old Church, a Franciscan foundation from the 13th century, surrounded by ancient gravestones overlooking Red Bay with Scottish isles in the horizon. One of the most famous gravestones, sits to the side of the monastery, a Celtic cross of local man, Dr James McDonnell, the founder of Belfast Medical School.
