If you love the writer Nikos Kazantzakis, you have to visit his house in the village of Mirtia. It is about 25 minutes ride, and except from the museum you will find yourself in a really beautiful traditional village, full of friendly and kind people. You can also combine it with the restaurant "elia kai diosmos" that I recommend in the food section

A small traditional Cretan village that displays characteristic samples of Cretan architecture.The older name of this village was Varvaroi and goes all the way back to the Venetian rule.This picturesque mountain village is surrounded by vineyards and offers stunning views of the north coast of Crete.It's the birthplace of Nikos Kazantzakis and the jewel of the village is the museum dedicated to him .It's worthwhile a visit,a journey accompanied by a great writer,poet,philosopher and traveler from Crete.Nikos Kazantzakis,possibly the world’s best-known Modern Greek writer,was born in Heraklion in 1883.His works have been translated into over thirty languages and continue to resonate with readers all over the globe.His grave is on the Martinengo Bastion of the Venetian walls in Heraklion.The Nikos Kazantzakis Museum pays tribute to the important intellectual,author,thinker,philosopher,politician and traveller Nikos Kazantzakis.The Museum is made up of a cluster of buildings in the central square of the historical village of Varvaroi,now known as Myrtia.The Museum Exhibition is housed on a site formerly occupied by the home of the Anemogiannis family,which was related to Nikos Kazantzakis' father,Kapetan Michalis.The Museum was founded by set and costume designer Yiorgos Anemogiannis a pioneering figure in Greek theatre.His fundamental aim was to preserve the author's memory and promote his work and thought.Significant assistance was offered by Eleni Kazantzaki,the author's second wife.The Museum holds manuscripts and notes by the author, samples of his correspondence with major thinkers, politicians and authors of his time and several first editions of his books in Greek and other languages,rare photographic material,souvenirs from his travels,personal effects,models,costumes and other material from theatre productions of his works in Greece and abroad,portraits and sculptures of the author,dozens of foreign-language editions of his works from all over the world,all a legacy that brings alive the memory of Nikos Kazantzakis and promotes his work and personality.The Nikos Kazantzakis Museum has quite literally become a site of worldwide intellectual pilgrimage.Every day,visitors arrive from all four corners of the globe,bearing witness to the lasting relevancy of the word expressed by the great Cretan, universal author and thinker. .“…I will willingly give the Museum… anything valuable I have connected to my long,laborious,intellectual life.Thus preserving the cell where a Heraklion labourer of the intellect has worked for so many years …” (Letter from N. Kazantzakis to SCHS, 9th January 1957).With the above words,the author of Zorba the Greek notified the Society of Cretan Historical Studies of his intention to donate personal possessions and archive material to the Historical Museum of Crete a few months prior to his death.The Nikos Kazantzakis Collection includes the Cretan author’s study from his home in Antibes,France with his library,original furniture and personal possessions,manuscripts of his works.Digital installations project a wealth of archive material and clips from films based on his novels,such as Zorba the Greek, directed by Michael Cacoyannis and The Last Temptation, directed by Martin Scorsese.

he Museum’s permanent exhibition is exclusively dedicated to Nikos Kazantzakis’ work and life. Since the Museum was founded in 1983, the permanent exhibition has been hosted in the central building of the establishment. In 2009, the Museum underwent a complete refurbishment, which was co-financed by the European Union and the Greek state. The works included refurbishing the building and re-exhibiting its collections based on a new conceptual structure and according to contemporary scientific guidelines and museological methods. The experience in the museum was enhanced with interactive audiovisual exhibits and wireless audio guides. The new exhibition was inaugurated on the 3rd of July 2010. At the new permanent exhibition, visitors can see manuscripts, letters, documents, Greek and foreign publications, photos and personal items, theatre material, rare audiovisual content, and a variety of artworks depicting the writer. Physical material, combined with digital reproductions, is provided in five thematic rooms: ● Biographical elements ● The Odyssey poem ● Friends and influences ● Early works and theatre plays ● Novels and travel fiction
