Vadakkumnathan Temple is an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva at city of Thrissur. Believed to have built in 8th Century, this temple is a classical example of Kerala temple architecture and has monumental towers on each of the four sides in addition to a Koothambalam, the traditional temple theater. Mural paintings depicting various scenes from the Mahabharata can be seen inside the temple. The shrines and the Koothambalam displays vignettes carved in wood. The temple, along with the mural paintings, has been declared as a National Monument by Government of India. Thekkinkadu Maidan, the vast open ground admeasuring about 65 acres encircling the Vadakkunnathan Temple, is the main venue of the renowned Thrissur Pooram festival. For time immemorial, this ground has played an important role in nurturing the socio-cultural and political life and legacy of Thrissur, synonymously known as the 'Cultural Capital of Kerala' In the year 2012 the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has recommended 14 sites, including Vadakkumnathan Temple and palaces, from Kerala to include in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The unique feature of this temple is that it is the rarest venues where the Koodiyattam, the ancient form of Sanskrit Theatre is still performed in the Koothambalam (Temple Theater) conforming to the rituals. The performance lasts from 7 days to 10 days, falling in the month of October. The performance is done by the legendary Chakyar family of Ammannur.
