The museum came into being in 1952 as an idea of the most famous man from Trebinje, a poet and a diplomat Jovan Dučić. First archaeological excavations by the museum were conducted in 1957 at the location of church of St. Peter in Zavala. First publication named Trebinje I by Vladimir Korać was published in 1966. In 1975 the museum started a magazine Tribunija. The museum disposes of 1.500 m2of usable area, out of which about 800 m2is exhibition space. Permanent displays and legacies: Dučić’s collection with valuable art exhibits (72 items of stone plastic, 14 paintings from domestic and foreign authors, tapestries, mosaics, Japanese needlework, Dučić’s medals, his ambassador suite and his manuscripts); Permanent ethnological display Public life and culture of Serbs in East Herzegovina in second part of 19th and first part of 20th century; Permanent archaeological display with valuable exhibits from the Stone age to the Middle Ages Memorial painting exhibition Atanasije Popović– 43 paintings of the famous painter, a gift to Trebinje from painter’s brother UrošPopović Legacy of painter Milena Šotra – 24 paintings with motifs of Herzegovina, Travel stories from Russia and 15 graphics of her brother, the famous graphic artist BrankoŠotra Legacy of academy painter Milorad Ćorović – 57 paintings Legacy of writer and sculptor Radovan Ždrale – 122 sculptures made of semi-precious stones Together with these exhibitions and legacies, the museum owns around 400 paintings, graphics, sculptures and other items. The Museum of Herzegovina also has an object on Ušće (Lastva), legacy of Dubravka Kujačić, where exhibitions, promotions and concerts are occasionally held. The museum also has a significant library fund (professional literature from various areas of science, culture and art). Apart from permanent displays and legacies, the Museum of Herzegovina also organizes occasional exhibitions, poetic recitals, book promotions and music concerts.
