The Jordaan is possibly the most famous neighbourhood in the Netherlands. There are numerous hip hangouts and trendy restaurants around Noordermarkt and along Westerstraat and Rozengracht, but there’s also no shortage of traditional brown cafés. The traditional Dutch folk music that was born here –is also still very much present, for example in Café Nol or during the annual Jordaan Festival. Galleries, restaurants, specialty shops and upwardly-mobile residents to its scenic streets but there’s undeniably still a distinct atmosphere to be enjoyed here.

Often cited as Amsterdam’s most charming neighbourhood, wandering into the Jordaan feels like stepping back in time. Originally a working class area, the Jordaan’s narrow streets and quaint buildings now make up one of Amsterdam’s most desirable quarters, dotted with independent art galleries, antiques shops, courtyard gardens and atmospheric bars and restaurants.

the Jordaan is arguably Amsterdam's most charming neighbourhood and the location of many excellent galleries (including the likes of Vassie and Torch). Working-class stalwarts rub shoulders with affluent newcomers in an area that, while lacking the grandiose architecture of the canals, wants for nothing in character. The Jordaan has no major sights; it's a place in which you stumble across things. The area north of the shopping-dense Rozengracht, the Jordaan's approximate mid-point, is picturesque, whereas the area to the south is more commercial.
