I love going to see the gorgeous flowers in an array of colours, and to feel the bustling vibe. There is often live music, and couples and families strolling around. You always see people around east London with flowers wrapped in brown paper and you know they’ve been to Columbia Road. The street is also full of independent shops full of creativity. They start setting up at 4 am and open at 8 am, though I’ve never made it there before 12 noon.
Tips from locals
It is a really North London tradition on a Sunday. One of the last places you can see a real east ender (person from the East side of London) manning a stall with all the cockney rhyming slang to go along with it. Beware if you get there late, it can get very busy at the Flower Market but just…
Open every Sunday morning, it's an oasis of flowers and foliage. I either walk their through Victoria park and along the canal, which is a gorgeous hour long walk, or borrow a Boris bike and I'm there in no time. There's some delicious little breakfast spots in and around the market too.
